There’s so much competition in the Big Ten West:
- Illinois. The Fighting BERTS seem to be near peak Illinois football.
- Northwestern. They will never have a better head coach than Pat Fitzgerald. Capable of having a quality Northwestern season any given year. Not to forget their new world class football facility.
- Minnesota. PJ Fleck has Minnesota rowing the boat to their most successful stretch in years.
- Iowa. Ferentz always has Iowa competing hard. Now with a revamped offense led by Cade McNamara and Erick All… watch out.
- Wisconsin. Just hired Luke Fickell with high expectations.
- Nebraska. Just hired Matt Rhule with high expectations.
- Purdue. Was at its peak for modern day Purdue football… the question is “what happens next” after losing a quality head coach in Jeff Brohm.
USC and UCLA are entering the Big Ten in 2024. Supposedly, divisions are going away. Interesting times ahead for Purdue. Seems to be bad if they miss on this coach hire.
I favor having no divisions and playing at least one more conference game each year. Any "pods" concept will inevitably put UM with OSU and MSU. That is not competitively fair to have three of the four best programs in one pod. Of course, this would be a good time to jettison MSU from the UM schedule. I can see the last game of the year being a clearly defined "traditional" game like UM v OSU or UCLA v USC.

MSU needs the game more than M does. Its the only time they feel relevant. They can go pound sand and find relevance somewhere else."in order to lead America you must love America"

Ugh.
Just like his longtime TE, Jason Witten… so boring in the media.

As I've often posted, you can pick the pre-season B10W winner by which of those teams don't have to play UM and OSU.

Bama Alum might like this. I have a hunch or fear Purdue might settle for Bill O’Brien as head coach. Seems like a safe play for Purdue. High floor, low ceiling. O’Brien did OK as head coach at Penn State.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

If Purdue will take, O’Brien, I will donate $100 to the Purdue Athletic Fund. Not even kidding.
Word is that Saban has told Bill to find another gig and has not renewed his contract."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Lol. Not rooting for it, but Bill O’Brien could easily be the choice if Purdue is turned down by several candidates. Similar to M settling on Brady Hoke in 2011. O’Brien did a decent job at Penn State. Remember, Purdue has lower standards than most programs. Could be the logical choice.
Now, supposedly Purdue has big money to throw around thanks to the new Big Ten TV deal. Brohm was offered whatever he wanted, but rightfully sided with his heart:

Here’s my top 5 Purdue wishlist:
1. Washington HC Kalen DeBoer. Former OC and QB coach. He should be your first call. See if Big10 money can outspend PAC12 money.
2. Former Washington HC Chris Petersen. At least make a phone call to see if he has any interest in returning to coaching. Petersen might not.
3. Kansas State HC Chris Klieman. Again, see if Big10 money can outspend an inferior conference HC. Klieman has done well at K-State. My pushback is he’s a defensive coach.
4. TCU OC Garrett Riley. Offensive mind. Young. Supposedly the best coordinator in college football. Risky, but high upside.
5. Ohio State Passing Game Coordinator and WR Coach Brian Hartline. Up and coming coach. Elite recruiter. Again, taking a huge risk.
I’m bumping off Kellen Moore from consideration. Again, I can see Purdue settling on Bill O’Brien or JaMarcus Shephard if they are turned down by several candidates. Kalen DeBoer far and away #1 if Purdue truly has “Big10 money” to spend.

Purdue had success with Tiller and Brohm because they were excellent passing game coaches. Specifically, Tiller was ahead of his time when it came to the spread offense. Brohm excellent at coaching QBs.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

The main issue with BOB is that he’s a “jobber” - clock in, do some things, go home, but his playcalling is this: if he decides they are gonna run the gap between center and guard, we run between center and guard. It doesn’t matter if the defense has 6 on the LOS and 9 in the box, that’s what we’re running. To make matters worse, our formation signals our call about 95% of the time.
With the passing game it’s midrange to the flat. Crosses, slants, go patterns are seen as too flashy or something.
Corners playing back? Kiffin (and even Sark) would bubble screen the opposing defense to death until they played honestly. BOB will have the WR run to where the secondary is set up and turn around.
It’s maddening. But he doesn’t give a shit. He just “clocks out” and goes home. Rumor is that last year when he didn’t get a new contact he just started mailing it in.

And it’s all on Saban for allowing it. Misplaced loyalty will end the dynasty. Although, there are strong rumors that the Sugar Bowl will be BOB’s last game.
