Virginia Tech travels to ODU to try to start new head coach Brent Pry out on the right note, and to avenge the loss that started the decline in Justin Fuente's fortunes in Blacksburg-- VT was 21-8 and ranked #13 in 2018 when they traveled to winless ODU and got thumped 49-35. From the start of that game to the end of his tenure, Fuente went 22-23.
VT is in a much different place this year than it was six years ago when Fuente took over. Justin Fuente took over a talented roster that had underperformed during Frank Beamer's last couple of years. Brent Pry is taking over a team sorely lacking in depth-- the backup offensive line consists of one redshirt sophomore and a whole bunch of freshmen. The Hokies are already down their starting RB, and can't afford injuries anywhere. They still have more overall talent than ODU, but not by much. I have no idea how this game is going to go.

Five turnovers, including a gift TD on one of the worst field goal snaps in history, plus 121 yards in penalties. That was a disastrous start for VT's new coaching staff. Losing to ODU again was always a possibility. Losing and looking that bad doing it feels like VT hitting rock bottom as a program, and it's only week one. The staff stressed the importance of playing a clean game, and they got more or less the polar opposite.
