  • They must not have been playing under NFHS rules. The clock runs in the 2nd half when the opponent is up by 35.

I think that rule should be expanded to where the game is ended at ANY time with a 50 point lead. It would stop a lot of that statistic building crap. And I haven't heard of very many games where a team was trailing by 50, and came back to win.

    • Nebraska once had a high school rule in 8 man football that at 45 lead by half or anytime in 2nd half game was over. I think 35 point running clock solves most of this crap...it really shortens a game ( you know the acronym liney...SPIT...only stops for scores, penalty, injury or timeout).

That might be why they “only” scored 23 points in the second half.

        • That's what I'm thinking. Hard to get more than a handfull of possessions with a running clock...

The DC made fantastic halftime adjustments. Anyone know his name? I’ll add him to my coaching search.

            • Yes the DC told the OC to run the :40 clock to :01 on every offensive play thus reducing the possessions of the opponent to just 3 in the second half.

              Bold strategy.

              • The team I worked with for 20 years had a lot of games where we scored 42 points. You get to the running clock and maybe the backups score a TD. A lot of the teams in the conference were small schools that struggled to field teams. It would suck when inevitably missed a PAT to that would mean that you can't get to 34.

Here in Michigan the MHSAA told us to remember "TIPS" (time-out, injury, penalty, score) but I like yours better.

I remember working a youth league where the local officials association agreed to WAIVE the 35 point rule "so all the kids could play". We got into a game where a team was leading by about 48 points and the coach was trying to get another touchdown with about 40 seconds to go/

We decided that we'd had enough of that stupidity, and started dropping flags on every play for 'holding". When he finally got into something like a 2nd and 50 YTG, he finally got the message and took a knee to end the game. I was the "U" in that game, and I remember looking over at the sideline and saying, "Coach is going to tell his QB to take a knee, so we'll protect his quarterback, .. right Coach??" The coach nodded and said, yeah, okay ...

                  Idiots.

I saw a team up by 40 onside kick...on their last TD the opponent had a roughing which we tacked on the kickoff...they recovered the onside...but were suddenly penalized every play after...

                      • Anytime I've seen a team try to run it up on an outmatched opponent in either football or basketball in high school the refs take charge. The aggressor starts getting a much tighter whistle.

                        • Jason, if you're around, is Justin Fuente done after this year?

                          • VT has had buzzard's luck since upsetting North Carolina week one, with three last-minute losses and some key injuries. Having said that, I don't think the bad luck excuse is going to help Fuente's case enough. Attendance is down, and much of the fan base has turned on him. I don't like it, because I think Fuente is a good coach, and I'm not sure VT wants to be in the market for a head coach this year. There's not an obvious fit for the job out there. If Fuente wins out, maybe he can still save his job, but that doesn't look likely.

                            • Down goes Wake Forest, done in by an injury-riddled defense and too many uncharacteristic mistakes. Oddly enough, this loss doesn't hurt them in the ACC standings, as this wasn't a conference game.
