Something I've noticed about watching these NFL Play-off games is how hard the top teams try to have a run and pound scheme. The Steelers were victimized by that and didn't have a QB that could successfully keep the chains moving with his arm when the run game got stuffed. The Steelers defense got gassed and Baltimore just squeezes the life out of them. That's the brothers Harbaugh MO. The Commanders had that QB, Daniels, to bail them out when their pound the rock approach got stymied. The Buccaneer's defense and Mayfield's legs and passing game failed (not the first time for Mayfield).

The NFL is cyclical, after Patrick Mahomes won his first Superbowl league wide teams went to a lot of cover 2 and cover 6 to take away the deep balls. It's why Mahomes now is just a dink and dunk passer. They took away the deep shots. When you are running those packages, it means you are in nickel and dime a lot. Most NFL teams base defensive scheme is nickel and if they have 8 in a box two of them will be light players (Dallas Cowboys). The last few seasons has seen a resurgence in running backs because of this. 3 years ago, running backs were thought to be disposable and you shouldn't spend much in resources to acquire one.

Detroit was one of the teams you couldn't run on earlier in the season because they deployed a true 4-3 base with a SAM, WIL and MIKE and all of their starting linebackers are huge. But because of injuries they have also had to revert to a nickel base. Eventually more teams will go to bigger linebackers for their fronts and then teams will start taking deep shots again.

He dinks and dunks because the coverages determine it. It's one of the reasons they traded Tyreke Hill. When you are facing Cover 2 and Cover 6, they are taking away the deep shots.
