But they were pretty good in the 90s, they never got over the hump but they had a pretty good front office. Unfortunately, they didn't know what they had, Pittsburgh got the fruits of the Lions not knowing that Kevin Colbert and Ron Hughes were damn good. The hiring of Millen set the team back 20 years. It's early but this coaching staff and front office look like keepers.
The Lions in the late 80s and early 90s very uncharacteristically had a few really good drafts. Jerry Ball, Chris Spielman, Bennie Blades, Barry Sanders, Ray Crockett, Willie Green, Herman Moore, Robert Porcher -- plus lots of other guys who were solid NFL starters. They made a few great trades and free agent acquisitions too.

That '92 season was devastatingly disappointing. I have always blamed it on the Dan Henning hire. He tried to turn the run-and-shoot into the offense that he ran for the Redskins and it sucked major ass. The OL wasn't nearly good enough. I expected us to be Super Bowl contenders after getting everyone healthy from the wonderful 1991 run. And instead the team just tanked.

    • Sheila Ford took over ownership of the Lions from Martha in 2020. Oddly was in the process of hiring Dan Campbell while hiring Brad Holmes.
That I did not know, she live in Ann Arbor also.

      • Their drafts from about 85 through the end of the 90s were consistently productive. Ron Hughes was a character and he was a great draft guy. They never knew what they had.

The Henning hire was devastating, but it was a symptom of Wayne's over willingness to change things at the drop of the hat.

        • Fontes was the quintessential "Players' Coach". He could really get them fired up sometimes and when they were firing on all cylinders, they could beat anyone. He wasn't a bad coach per se, but he honestly struck me as not being a very smart guy -- the Henning hire is a perfect example. Reminds me of Brady Hoke a bit. But I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Wayne. By far my happiest Lions memories were with him coaching.

I think that it was Scott Mitchell that ultimately sank him. They put the hopes of the franchise on his shoulders and he didn't have the psyche for it.

There are some old 1990s Lions games on youtube. Mitchell had such awful mechanics and he was a hothead to boot. It's a shame the guy couldn't get matched up with the right coach who could unlock his full potential. He really had a ton of talent.

            • Russ Thomas did more to kill Lions fans hopes than any single human being on earth. He guarded WCF's pocketbook like it was Fort Knox. Anybody who would argue that Billy Sims didn't deserve top star pay had to be out of their mind. That was Russ Thomas.

              • Lions were cursed long before Barry, can't blame him for his Lions teams not having better defenses, offensive lineman, QB's.

                • They did eventually agree to terms with Sims, the biggest blunder was screwing up with Bubba Baker.

Sheila Ford Hamp has been a better Owner than her father ever was.

He was inept, dumb, foolish, stubborn, and too loyal to losers such as Thomas and Millen.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard online that WCF Sr. thought that the late Don Shula was too young to be a Head Coach right when he bolted Detroit at the age of 33 and went to the old Baltimore Colts to be their Head Coach in 1963, the same year WCF Sr. purchased the Detroit Lions.

As long as Mrs. Ford Hamp listens to people like Chris Speilman, Brad Holmes, Ray Agnew, and John Dorsey, the Detroit Lions will get better and better.

                    • ACLS is a quarterly thing where I works. BLS is hands on every quarter go do compressions and ventilate hooked up to a monitor. acls gives 2 scenarios every quarter just a written test. And if you miss too many questions it prompts you to retake it immediately until you pass been that way for 3 years I've been in az. Haven't had to do a megapode or intubate for acls in years. damn near impossible to flunk acls anymore.

                          • I just learned there is a chip in the NFL football that can tell us how far the ball gets from the end zone down to an accuracy of .1 yards. So if true why are these bozos even measuring first downs by the eye test and sticks and chains?

                            • I think that will be one of the first decisions that refs are going to lose in football. The technology exists to mark the progress of the ball, and once the NFL is comfortable with it, the refs won't be doing that anymore. they'll also lose the forward progress/out of bounds calls for punted balls that are not caught.

In baseball, they are very close to eliminating umpires for ball/strike calls. Its already been tested in the minors with good results. I just want to see what happens when some multi-million dollar hitter is called out on strikes by a computer, with the bases loaded and a game on the line. Who is the manager and player going to argue with?
