And an Amazon warehouse now sits where the Silverdome used to be

    • I don't believe they take winning seriously especially when they passed on the opportunity to be a Super Bowl contender when they had Sanders.

The man was the best RB in the history of the game. He retired early because the Lions refused to go all in on putting great players around him. They had the perfect opportunity to do something great, and instead, they let good free agents leave, and continued to overpay mediocre talent.

But, they make money. No doubt about that.

I loved the Silverdome too. Especially for the HS Football State Finals. Easy to get to, tons of free parking, great sight lines. There were no bad seats in the house. I loved it. Agree with your assessment of Ford Field. Its all a bunch of specialty fluff that looks nothing like a serious football venue. The location SUCKS and if you aren't familiar with Detroit traffic patterns, you can end up in some seriously bad areas very quickly. I used to go to the HS Finals there regularly, but I haven't been there for a few years now.

        • Cleveland Municipal Stadium was one of the worst stadiums ever to watch baseball and that's mainly what I remember it for. Pretty sure I only ever went to one Browns game (not a place you generally took kids back then, lol). But went to plenty of Tribe games in the late 80's-early 90's. Shoot if you got straight A's in school you could get two free tickets for years. It seated close to 80,000 and about 10% of the seats were filled. By the early 90's the place was very run down and unloved.

From a historical perspective it's kind of a shame it's gone. But I don't remember the interior having anything remarkable about it. Just very old, very big, and lots of seats way far away from the field. Whenever they eventually tear down Jacobs aka Progressive Field will be sadder to me.

          • Jon Gruden had what might have been a racist moment TEN YEARS AGO, .. so of course, his life must be terminated.

Those who harumph the loudest about this are probably worse racists than Gruden is.

            • John Gruden is out as HC of the Raiders.

                • Eventually nobody will be employable. Well, other than the groveling sycophants.

                  • At least this frees up Gruden to run for the Senate in Tennessee or Ohio.

                    • Apparently there were several other emails where he doubled down on poking all of the -isms.

As a young and dashing COO at a medical center, I learned that you never send an email to someone that you wouldn’t mind being read in front of the entire company. Emails can be candid and tough: “John is not producing at a satisfactory level. I want him fired by close of business” is fine; however, “John is a retarded pikey piece of shit and if we have to put up with something this incompetent, it should at least have blonde hair and nice tits” is not.

                      • That’s true. He also wasn’t employed by the NFL at the time and it was a decade ago.

Yeah, the email liney posted about the other day, which I think is open to interpretation, was the tip of the iceberg I guess. Seems like he had (has?) a habit of calling anyone he doesn't like a "faggot" and/or "pussy". Complained that the NFL was hiring too many women and "queers".

He and Bruce Allen also exchanged porn, presumably from Allen's official team account? Lovely

                          ******************

In the emails, Gruden called the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, a “faggot” and a “clueless anti football pussy” and said that Goodell should not have pressured Jeff Fisher, then the coach of the Rams, to draft “queers,” a reference to Michael Sam, a gay player chosen by the team in 2014.

In numerous emails during a seven-year period ending in early 2018, Gruden criticized Goodell and the league for trying to reduce concussions and said that Eric Reid, a player who had demonstrated during the playing of the national anthem, should be fired. In several instances, Gruden used a homophobic slur to refer to Goodell and offensive language to describe some N.F.L. owners, coaches and journalists who cover the league.

In emails detailed by The New York Times, Raiders Coach Jon Gruden casually used misogynistic and homophobic language to disparage people.

                          • Mike,

Reportedly, some of the emails uncovered were more recent. Personally, I hate woke activism; that said, I would also hate to hire someone who was so stupid that he sent emails like that without thinking that they could be forwarded, saved, and used as blackmail or to cause drama and embarrassment to not only himself, but his family and employers present or future.

                            • Fair enough. I wasn’t aware of all the other stuff. He strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn’t have a filter. Stupid to do it in emails.

                              • In a way, it reminds me of Mike Price. Price had been tabbed to be head coach at Alabama. The SEC had a 3-day meeting in Pensacola at the Crowne Plaza. All the rival coaches, scores of fans, and 400 members of the media attended. Price went to a strip club, got drunk, and befriended two strippers. Going to a strip clinic and pulling a couple of spicy gymnasts is okay, but carrying them back to the Crowne Plaza and marching them through the lobby in front of the aforementioned crowd to your room and then leaving them there the next morning to order $2000 worth of room service (whole bottles of premium liquor) shows the kind of dipshittery that makes you ask, “Do we need to keep this kind of stupid on our payroll?” He was a millionaire. One phone call could have rented him an upscale private beach house where he could have railed the dancers to his Viagra-laced heart’s content. To add to Price’s stupidity, he did this before he had even signed the contract that Alabama had sent him.

Gruden showed a level of stupidity that is mind boggling. Like with the administration at Alabama with Price, Raiders’ ownership felt Gruden’s stupidity was more harmful than his continued employment was beneficial. That’s their call.

Emails never die. People save them, forward them, and will use controversial ones for shits and giggles let alone for revenge, financial gain, power, or in exchange for some kind of perceived personal benefit. I can’t believe he didn’t consider that when he sent it.
