      • Most people here think that the Michigan basketball team should be executed by fire squad. But I say be reasonable! It's fine just to give them some cement shoes and a boat ride. We don't need all that fanfare.

          • Off-season nonsense. Notable head coaches born in Ohio:

            John Heisman
            Paul Brown
            Woody Hayes
            Bo Schembechler
            Don Shula
            Chuck Noll
            Ara Parseghian
            Lou Holtz
            John Harbaugh
            Jim Harbaugh
            Jim Tressel
            Urban Meyer
            Jon Gruden
            Les Miles
            Bob Stoops
            Don James

That's 10 CFB-only coaches, 9 of whom won national titles. 4 NFL-only coaches, all of whom won at least 1 Super Bowl. And two NFL/CFB guys. Paul Brown won championships on both levels and Jim Harbaugh seems likely to win something.

15 national titles (plus however many Heisman's teams won)
8 Super Bowls (and 3 NFL titles)

            Also of note:

Don Nehlen, who was the face of WV football
Dick LeBeau, arguably one of the best NFL assistant coaches of all-time

And some current CFB HCs still earning their stripes:

            Pinkel, Pelini, Hoke.

This mostly stems from a conversation I had with an Arkansas fan needling him about how Holtz wouldn't even make the top 10 for Ohio coaches. But, it's related to similar needle re Bo.

            • Talent, you might as well add presidents of the United States. 8 American presidents from the state of Ohio - "The Cradle of Presidents".

It is so great to live in the past.

The seven presidents born in Ohio were Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison (grandson of William Henry Harrison), William McKinley, William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding.

                • Urban is the present. Woot!

History-wise, I prefer Ohio as savior of the United States with Grant, Sherman and Chamberlain suppressing the treasonists.

                  • Incidentally, if you intermingle born and "ran from", it is 8 with WH Harrison. 7 born and 6 ran-froms. Ben Harrison ran from Indiana and Grant from Illinois.

                      • There's no earthly reason for a coach that's never won a conference title to be on that list with THOSE coaches other than conditionally. I realize you think Hoke is every bit as a good as Saban. But, then again, you're insane.

                        • Saban isn't from Ohio but he played at Kent State and coached at Kent, Toledo, OSU, and the Browns.

                          • BTW, I did the research a while back and not just Bo, but nearly Bo's entire original staff was from Ohio, brought straight from Miami with him.

                            • I considered "Ohio connections", DSL, but that's a bit too hard to define. Saban definitely has them, though. The Harbaughs are the only two that don't have strong Ohio connections. I think they spent 8 or 9 years in Ohio before moving. The rest are pretty much Ohio born and bred.

Don James is a guy who is definitely overlooked, especially in the Midwest. But he is/was a legend in Seattle.
