It's always darkest before the dawn.

I know you Bucks aren't too concerned with compliance, so I'm not surprised that you have no idea there is a limit on the number of coaches.

NCAA bylaw 11.7.2 provides "There shall be a limit of one head coach, nine assistant coaches and two graduate assistant coaches who may be employed by an institution in bowl subdivision football."

    • Thanks! I knew there was a limit on total number of coaches. Didn't realize you couldn't have, e.g., "co-head coaches". Wouldn't seem like something the NCAA would necessarily have their hands on -- i.e., they'd let you allocated the 10 coaching spots as you see fit.

Gnashing of teeth? We just went 10-2 with a team dominated by 3* talent and we're probably headed to a BCS Bowl. That was with a team going through an offensive transition. And recruiting is back to traditional Michgian standards now that the hillbilly clown is gone. You guys just hired a coach who cracked under the pressure at Florida and left a steaming pile behind. And the early rumor list for assistants does not scare me. The fact that you've got Braxton Miller and all of your starters back on defense scares me more than the coach. But 6-6 is still 6-6. RichRod's 2010 team had a better record against a tougher schedule.

        • Ah, you're going to need to do better than that. Fantastic day! I do like you're efforts at trying to convince yourself it's of little significance. Good times.

The page is turned. CFN NAILS IT!:

Ohio State is more than just one of the premier potential openings of 2011—it’s one of just a handful of true destination jobs in all of sports. The program is uniquely positioned to perennially compete for Big Ten—and national—championships, thanks to boasting the right facilities, base of talent in Ohio and tradition of winning that spans generations in the Midwest. It’s going to take more than tattoo-gate to wipe the luster off this position. Penn State’s problems only makes the Leaders division more winnable.
The Right Candidate: Welcome to the fun, Urban. The pressure is going to be through the roof from Day One. There won’t be any grace period and there won’t be any time to adjust. The expectations are already unrealistic, but that’s Ohio State football. It takes a coach of Meyer’s stature to handle it. Think of it like Nick Saban taking over Alabama. It was an impossible situation, but he was the right guy for the right job.
Is it possible that Ohio State may not be in the "wilderness" for ages as so many here predicted? I mean, is it actually possible? I was told so many times OSU was finished for years and years. Well, we'll see. For now, I suppose OSU is still off in this "wildernees" -- whatever the F that is -- but I like OSU's shiny new compass.

          • RichRod went 7-5 in 2010 while facing 3 BCS teams an 11-win team on top of that, and then four more bowl teams on top of that.

OSU just went 6-6 playing 6-6 Miami and the weakest Big Ten in recent memory. Urban's got his work cut out for him.

              • Feel free to bag on the 2011 OSU team all you want, Hanni. The fact that you know better and still insist on pursuing it makes it all the more enjoyable for me. But the worse you can make the 2011 team sound, the more amazing and astonishing Coach Meyer's 2012 efforts will appear. So, carry on....music to my ears!

                • Urban's biggest problem is going to be getting players steeped in the tradition of selfishness to play as a real team.

osu fans might find Bacon's rendition of what went down during Rodriguez's tenure instructive. Rodriguez was a good coach, seemed to care about his players but had no clue about how to play to the crowd of people who could make it easy for him or hard. He alienated many, including LC, but probably more important his vulgarity and churlish behavior with AD Martin, President Coleman and indirectly before the Regents (a more political group than anything he faced at WVU) killed any chance he was going to have to succeed at M.

meyer has a tough road ahead. He's a great coach. He's also hugely egotistical if what I have read about him has any truth to it. It's all about him. He may even be described as the exact opposite of Coach Hoke. I don't have a clue about his political acumen but if he rubs the wrong people the wrong way with his self importance, he'll be in trouble.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                  • I think Meyer will do great... I just don't think he will last. The only question is WHEN will his cardiac condition bring an end to his run.

7 years/ 40 million is big money (I think easily #1 among NCAA coaches??). I wonder how much Ohio will be willing to pony up for the staff.

                    • If players steeped in the tradition of selfishness were responsibile for Ohio State's glorious 9 year run under Coach Tressel, then I say don't change at thing!

More importantly, I'm lapping this up. OSU's 2011 team is worse than M's 2010 team. OSU has unspeakably selfish players who can't play as a real team. Oh my, Coach Meyer has a Mt. Everest of problems to climb. It will take a bona fide coaching superstar to squeeze a decent season out of 2012. Love it.

                      • Meyer will definitely face some opposition if he tries to crack down on the DeGeronimo and Dennis Talbott types. It looks like Meyer ran a clean program at Florida from an NCAA rules standpoint, which is probably bad news for OSU. The OSU players loved Tressell because he looked the other way at that kind of stuff. Meyer is kind of an unknown in this department.

There's no real limit, IMO. M, rightly, got the ball rolling with Mattison (who, I think, made more than Fickell). OSU is going to pay the entire staff top dollar. From what I've read, they're targeting a few SEC assistants. That should give you some idea of what they're going to pay.

The BoT will not sit idly by and bean-count.

                          • Uh oh, the obstacles continue to mount. Horrid team. Incredibly selfish team. Possibly lacks political acumen (I could post lots on this, but why bother). Definitely an egomaniac. May have the temerity to shut down the millions of dollars boosters pay players. I just don't know how Coach Meyer will ever succeed.

Man, 2012 is going to suck. I can't even imagine how bad 2013 is going to be.

                            • This is from the "insider" who first posted the "UM3 will be introduced at halftime of Duke game" about 6 weeks ago and broke the UM3 to OSU story 10 days ago:

                              1) Meyer meets players today at 4pm,

                              2) Meyer introduced at OSU press conference today at 6pm

                              3) OSU WILL accept a bowl invitation if the game is the GATOR BOWL vs Florida Jan 2nd.....not sure what they will do if they can't pull that together(but smart money is on it happening)
I suspect only (3) is of any relevance to you folks. It's hard to imagine a more juicy bowl matchup than that -- well, if you ignore talent and focus solely on storyline.
