Yup. Our "major" rules violations consisted of 15 minutes a day of practice overage and an assistant monitoring voluntary workouts, for which we flagellated ourselves appropriately. We also had a guy who lied to the NCAA and was fired immediately (unlike Tressel at OSU). We weren't even guilty of a Failure to Monitor. Come back to me when we hire a coach who got his previous program a LOIC, and then we get a Maurice Clarett, Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, and a huge, mile long list of violations, shady behavior, and improper benefits as long as yours.

LOIC implies that the problems went beyond tressel. If charged in a future LOA, it means the NCAA thinks it has found enough evidence (circumstantial or owtherwise) to make that allegation.

If beyond tressel then osu can't argue the rogue coach line and that they've handled it with his resignation.

That's osu's problem because with LOIC comes the liklihood of > 1 year of bowl bans and > a minimal loss of scholarship. osu will not be hurt that significantly if they can get by with a minimum of sanctions; the hurt time mounts if LOIC occurs.

You should be concerned apout that I would think as the evidence (circumstantial or not) for it is pretty convincing.

Your "point" was that if the NCAA could clear a clear violation like Cam Newton then it's judgment is pretty much worthless on everything, therefore clearing Troy Smith back in 2005 means nothing. Which is erroneous in its own right, but the ridiculous nature of comparing a workout camp with anything involving Cam Newton is what struck me. Again, your intent is clear: Paint OSU as negatively as possible. Bring up Cam Newton as a comparison even if the two situations aren't remotely comparable.

I can go through that list again and come up with more glaring facts that go unmentioned. For instance, Jonathan Skeete never came back to the team. His scholarship was stripped, he was booted from school, but once his probation was up, he was readmitted. He was allowed to try and walk-on with the team in Spring of 2006. He didn't make the cut and never played a single second for us after his conviction. He transferred to Morgan State where he played from 2006-2008.

Skeete wasn't merely suspended, his scholarship was stripped. And he was NEVER "reinstated with the team" as the list of allegations states.

          • Oh I fully expect that schools ad to step down right before they go before the NCAA. Like the Tenn ad did. After all he lied to.

            1. "This issue is confined to these 5 players." Uuuummmm no it's more like 24 players dateing back to 2003. Thanks for playing.

            2. He said he had no knowledge of the man who had Pryor sign items for $$$$ and took him golfing. Yet in the middle of last season he went to the person personally and told him to leave his players alone.

Why would he do that if he didn't know?

            • BTW the Columbus dispatch beat writters (Tim May & Rob Ollier) are both saying tO$U are looking at a 3-4 year Bowl ban much along the lines of USC.

If that's the case then how does that school:

              1. bring in a "big time head coach? Which they WON"T DO! they never have. They bring in coach's who make a name for themselves.

              2. Keep and get top recruits? They have 4 & 5 star kids leaving their commtments right now. Do they think it's going to get better?

              • On the Dispatch article showing the parade honoring tresssel ....

Not surprising at all. I've had only a minimal exposure to the state of ohio but Sean's wife grew up in Marion and her family still lives in ohio. None of them are osu fans but they are surrounded by them; they are everywhere and come from every walk of life. osu jackets, Ts and caps adorn 9.5 out of every 10 people. I believe it is considered a violation of some unwritten religious law not to wear something depicting osu. Store fronts are packed with osu gear. I never paid much attention to whether or not it was signed but it probably was while players got paid for this stuff.

So, yeah, I can see a parade of idiots in some ohio town honoring a guy who should be scorned but that's how things are done there. I'm sure Sean can add more.

                • The prosecution missed a key piece of evidence in the Casey Anthony trial. No jury on earth would have acquitted if this were known.

I'll believe this when I see it. I don't think the B10 wants OLieO out of the bowl mix for that long, and they should be able to steer the NCAA away from that drastic of a penalty. Hate them if we must, but they travel well to bowl games, and bowl sponsors aren't going to want OLieO out of consideration for bowl games for very long. If there are any bowl penalties, I'd expect it to be one (2012) at the most.

I'd expect the most damaging sanctions to be in the area of scholarships, and forfeiture of games/seasons. In addition, there may be a "return of bowl revenue" for their last bowl game, but I'd tend to doubt they'll even go that far.

If I had to predict, I'd say that OLieO is looking at the following sanctions:

                    1. Forfeiture of the 2010 season, and bowl game, and maybe a return of bowl revenue.

                    2. Forfeiture of 3-5 scholarships per year for 3 years max. Maybe less.

                    3. No CCG or bowl appearances in 2012.

Along with those, OLieO's compliance office will probably have someone from the NCAA looking over their shoulder very carefully over the next 2-3 seasons.

Overall, I think they'll get off fairly easy.

                    • USC was a 2-year postseason ban, expect the same for Ohio. 4-years of probation...

                      • Like I said, I'll believe a multiple year postseason ban when I see it. The NCAA can reason that Pryor and his brethren's antics only affected one year, so thus, the one year postseason ban.

Like I have said many times before. OLieO has many friends in the upper echelons of the NCAA. Those friendships will end up helping them when it comes time to dole out punishment. I expect it to be very light. Those who want or expect heavy punishment for them are going to be disappointed.

I have to agree with you, Jeff. Gene Smith is not long as the AD. It certainly seems he is going to be let go sooner than later.

Can anyone convince me that a coach with such a fantastic track record arbitrarily stepping down and an AD being dimissed under all of the allegations and wrong-doing that has been going on at OSU can somehow not be construed as LOIC?

They needed to fire Tressel and Smith immediately. That way, at least it is perceived that they are trying to fix the problem. Instead, they took the typical Ohio route: Admit to nothing more than what they have been caught red-handed doing then lie and cover up everything that they can while the NCAA started to investigate. That will ultimately be the catalyst for Ohio's demise.
