  • OSU tacitly endorsed Tressel's cheating when they gave him a meaningless slap on the wrist and Gordon Gee said "I hope he doesn't fire me." No firing, no self-imposed penalties. No desire whatsoever to maintain an honorable program that follows the rules. Textbook definition of "lack of institutional control". This applies for any institution, be it a corporation or an athletic program.

I don't remember Joe Roberson or Tom Goss being implicated in the Ed Martin mess.

    • That's why I think this article must be a doozy. OSU already said they didn't care that Tressel cheated. So what is the new info that was so bad that they had to get rid of him even before the article hit?

      • Woody was and is the greatest coach this conference has ever seen. You'd do well to remember that

Also, Caroll Widdoes (1945) and Wes Fesler (1950) quit due to stress...neither was fired or resigned. So there!

          Now you're just being silly.

                • In the Ed Martin mess, I think the NCAA came down harder on M ['lack of institutional control']because of M's lackluster self investigation.

That's the funny thing. The entire OSU nation has been insisting that Saint Jim is a perfectly honorable character who just made one little unfortunate mistake. Now they are going to have to suddenly throw him under the bus and say that he was a master cheater, but nobody else at all was involved.

As opposed to OSU's brutal crackdown for the past decade and Draconian five game suspension of Tressel?

Michigan fired Steve Fisher immediately. The University President didn't declare "I hope he doesn't fire me", and they didn't give him a meaningless five game suspension. There was no e-mail trail linking him to Ed Martin. He didn't have a track record of cheating that dated back 20 years to a prior job. If that's lackluster, then I'd love to see what the NCAA thinks of OSU's self policing.

You're making quite a habit of being wrong.

                          • It's pretty hard to disgrace yourself at OSU. Because, you know, everyone
kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me.

                            • Woody had to be fired. He never apologized for any of his antics. Even Bo called him on the morning after the punching incident, and tried to get him to resign gracefully. Woody refused.

                              He was fired in disgrace.

Did he deserve better? Yes. But his pride and arrogance would not allow it.

And despite all that he remains the greatest coach in Big10 history. More conference wins than anyone else, and tied with Bo for the most conference titles. Plus three national titles. I would argue that the 50's and 60's were the Big10 strongest era (much stronger than the 70's and 80's) and he was a large part of that.
