  • I've been hearing about the SI article for longer than just the past week. More like a month probably. At least since the NCAA sent their letter back in mid-April

    • Remember back in 94 when this stunning SI story got Bobby Bowden fired and made into a virtual pariah in coaching circles?

      • Rival's mods have been following the progress on the SI piece involving osu pretty carefully. Balas reports yes, there is an article, and yes it contains damaging information but apparently SI is pissed that the release date got leaked and/or they want the release to be at a time when they can maximize sales/impact.

He also reports that reliable sources in c-bus claim that osu is concerned about the SI article (I can't find anything from any thing I read that confirms this one way or the other).

osu posters continue to take a wait and see approach generally 50% in support of tressel but that number has decreased from 75% when rumors of trouble beyond the tat5 first started to surface. To me that suggests there is some substance to allegations that the football program may have known or should have known what was going down with the cars.

In my glee over all of this, I'm trying to maintain a sensible balance between my perception of what could happen to osu and what actually will, truth and fiction and all of that stuff. If tressel coached Michigan, given his track record of apparently lying/covering up, I would not support him and I'd be sending emails to Brandon to fire him ASAP.

That's a fair point. I wonder, though, was FSU already under NCAA investigation at the time that story broke? The assumed SI article on osu comes at a time when smoke is billowing out of c-bus like there's a 5 alarm fire in there somewhere.

The way I see it is this: A local newspaper reporter with an axe to grind - Rosenberg - gained immediate national attention and the NCAA investigated the subject of his article. It stands to reason that an iconic publication such as SI will have greater impact, not only of public opinion, but also in actual useful intelligence uncovered by the author. I don't recall the specifics of the FSU article or how that played out but the alleged author of the osu article nailed Minnesota basketball pretty good. He seems to dot his "i"s and cross his "t"s.

If you aren't a little concerned at this point than you are willfully ignorant of the circumstances osu football and their coach find themselves in.

Clearly, as I read the osu fan traffic, there is a major attempt to deflect a crushing reality here.

That is human nature for the intellecutally impaired.

            • But, Strangelove makes a good point when he refers to the SI story about Florida State. Bowden not only survived, he went on to become a well-respected icon of the game, mentioned alongside the names of Paterno, Bryant and Eddie Robinson in the brotherhood of great coaches.

Tressel and O-Lie-O could slip away in the same fashion.

              • That's true, Liney. I guess it all depends on what is alleged in the SI article and if it can be proven. With the NCAA's punishment of USC it appears they are finally taking the kid gloves off. After the SMU death penalty I think the NCAA became a little gun shy about handing out strong penalties but now the tide is turning. If USC can get slapped, anyone can get slapped. The NCAA has a great opportunity right now to nail Auburn and ohio state with severe, program crippling, penalties that would send a clear message to the CFB world: You may win a title or two through underhanded means but there will be a price for that. Conduct your risk-reward analyses accordingly.

                • I hope you're right, Mike.

I know it may be difficult for you all to believe, but I actually hope that the NCAA slaps Auburn harder than they do O-Lie-O. The brazenness of how Cam Newton was "bought" by Auburn needs to be dealt with severely.

O-Lie-O deserves punishment, if only for general principles.

Which won't mean that Tressel isn't a guilty bucket of slime. DSL is throwing out some weak shit these days, but, then again, that's all he's got.

Dohrmann told this guy that SI executive editors are salivating over the article. The quote was [from the source] ‘it’s going to be bad for Tress. … it’s something new and it’s big-time, it goes back to when Tress was at Youngstown.’ I was told that it’s all new stuff.

Difference lies in the fact that people blamed FSU boosters and not Bowden. He was "unaware". Not sure the Vest can make that claim

Oh, I absolutely agree. The fact that the man lied and covered up for players that he knew would be declared ineligible fully qualifies him for the "bucket of slime". Shoot, even Woody Hayes would likely call him a bucket of slime.

And I'm still steamed at him for how he treated Lloyd Carr. Not from a coaching point of view, but on a personal level.

What'd he do to Lloyd? You're not still crying about the bomb-sniffing dogs are you? And how that was all Tressel's doing?

I seriously doubt Saint Jim was one of the ones using Lloyd's "health issues" to negatively recruit against Michigan.
