  • During ufm's press conference today, he was asked about kneeling and holding his head and whether what FOX reported - he had collided with another coach - was accurate. He said it was not and he's been dealing with headaches for a while. Mentioned something about surgery in the past for a cyst. "It;s something we have to monitor," he said.

That's all I know and I'm not going to speculate on what kind of things he might be dealing with.

      • I would speculate if the differential diagnosis for a headache wasn't about 2000 conditions. When it comes to orthopedic or sports related symptoms, the differential is much, much smaller so, speculating is a reasonable thing to do. Here? No.

              • Incidentally, OHIO STATE GOTS SCREWD BY OFFICIALZZ!!!! I think that's how it's supposed to go. I think OSU had 3 holding calls (at least) and two replays on IU's only 2nd half score were borderline crazy when taken together. So, I mean...SCREWD!!!!

                        • I can't say if this is an accurate assessment of Greg Shiano's osu D by Ian Boyd of SB Nation or not. But the numbers aren't good and neither is the film study he undertakes to demonstrate osu's problems on defense in 2018. He relates these problems to Shianno's schemes. Like I implied in another post, osu appears to have the talent at LB, S and CB to run Schiano's aggressive man schemes. Is it a teaching thing? Players not buying in or not understanding? M certainlyis familiar with the impact of bad coaching on it's OL. Maybe talent can elaborate:

                          • In other words, he did not complete a single long pass (through the air, YAC were off the charts). I haven't seen any other OSU games, but what impressed me in this one were the OSU athletes and YAC.
Yeah, Haskins isn't very good. This seems to be the genius line of thought emanating from MGo boards. Haskins can't throw deep! Shea's MUCH BETTER! It reminds me of last season when they bagged on Denzel Ward all year because he got beat by Simmie Cobbs for a half in the opener. 4th overall pick; crushing it with Cleveland right now. Or the Jourdan Lewis >>>> Michael Thomas shit. It's the epitome of homerism. I mean, I love serving up the crow, so I love it. The stupider the better. Incidentally, that's why I'm not going to be one of those idiot fans that say "Rashan Gary doesn't look too good." Or whatever.

Well, they HAVE lost two valuable position coaches over the past two season. Two years ago Fickell went to UC, and he did a great job with the LBs. This season Coombs went to the Titans, and his run of success with DBs was unparalleled. So, I'm not concerned about the man coverage. Last week IU hit some long fades that were into good coverage. That's the risk you take with aggressive man. As noted above, Denzel Ward had trouble with Simmie Cobbs last year -- Denzel Ward is REALLY good. Even on the long PSU TD, KJ Hamler is really good and only going to get better. Shaun Wade, who was in coverage, will be a 1st round pick. That said, they do NOT have a lockdown no. 1 corner this year like Ward or Lattimore.

However, the biggest problem has been at SS. They've played Isaiah Pryor and Jahsen Wint there. Wint, unequivocally, can't play. His angle to the ball is horrible. He's out of position frequently. I think I can put at least half of the "big" plays on him. He started against Oregon State and was eventually replaced. Unfortunately, Pryor was out against IU for the 1st half and Wint was in. He was responsible for turning a 10 yard run into a 45 yard run. Pryor isn't good right now, but I think he can eventually play. He's been better as the season went on (he did take a horrible angle against TCU that led to a 93 yard TD, but that guy could fucking fly).

If it were just the SS, then OSU would be fine. But, the LB play has been really sketchy, too. You basically have new guys learning on the fly. Baron Browning is talented out the ass but still plays one step behind everything. Tuf Borland is solid, but he's not dynamic. Malik Harrison has some ability but was taking too many false steps early in the season (better now). The LBs are sort of growing into it, but they're still not great.

Finally, there is no replacing Nick Bosa. Chase Young stepped up his game -- and he needed to. But the other ends are merely "good".

So, what you see from Ohio State's defense is about 80-90% really good (depending on the opponent). But then they shit themselves by giving up a huge play. For example, they were finally starting to throttle PSU's offense then, boom -- 93 yd TD. Then they throttled PSU's offense for several straight possession then the 4th Q comes and -- boom, 2 straight TD drives. Against IU, the 1st half is a trainwreck then the 2nd half IU does basically nothing (with the exception of one drive aided by two dubious replay calls). So, it's been hard to move the ball consistently against OSU in small chunks, but it's been remarkably easy to score TDs on massive chunk plays.

The other issue with OSU is Malcom Pridgeon at OG. But, the offense really isn't the concern. Sure, they can't run and Haskins can't throw downfield at all, but somehow they get by. Heh.

                            • Also, if I had my way -- without seeing a practice snap from any of them -- I'd move Okudah to Safety to start over Pryor, at least against spready teams. I'd use Sheffield, Arnette and Wade as my 3 primary CBs. Okudah and Fuller as 4th/5th cover options are really good. I'm not sure how well Okudah can play the run. Pryor is bigger -- at one point everyone felt he'd grow into a WLB.

                              But, that's me.

Finally, it's been a really long time since they blew the doors off of IU. Even in their national title year, they played IU at the end of the season -- when they were really starting to role -- and it was 21-20 at the end of the 3rd IN COLUMBUS. Tevin Coleman rushed for like 500 yards including a 90 yard TD. And I'm not going to get too upset about Penn State. They basically couldn't deal with McSorley running the ball, especially on scrambles. That was what killed them. They don't have to deal with that sort of threat that often in the B10.

                              • Good read ........ I think you're right regarding the moron segment of mgoboard who think Patterson >>>>> Haskins. Here's the PFF scores of interest (70 is average 90 is elite)

                                Hornibrook, 92.0.
                                McSorley, 90.8.
                                Haskins, 83.9.
                                Patterson, 83.5.

While PFF grades can be useful in a comparative sense, they tend to be game specific based on what that QB is facing and what he is asked to do in a particular game. I'd have to go look at the play by play in each game to flesh out the impact of those two things on a game by game basis ..... but I think for instance, Hornibrook and McSorely get bumped up overall due to games where the scheme calls on them to go deep a good bit where as both Patterson and Haskins do that much less often. Just a gut feeling here but I bet I could get the numbers to support that view.

The LB, SS take is a good one re loss of Fickell and Cooms. I don't think I appreciated in detail the impact that unit/position coaches have on a lot of things beyond command of the technicals a player demonstrates until Durkin left and Brown stepped in then Warriner replaced Frey and Drevno. Warriner in particular seems to have a connection with the players in the unit he's coaching that turns a concept or teaching point into on-field performance. He obviously has a reputation for that as you know.

The big play problem is one that M fans are familiar with too. That problem present in 2017 has been almost eliminated in 2018 - I've seen the numbers that support that and I've seen the numbers that support the observation that osu gives up a lot of plays over 30 or 40 yards in 2018 compared to 2017. Obviously, that demonstrates the value of experience in a system and coaching continuity in that system. M is developing it and is probably 3 years in - For M in a positive sense and osu in a negative, on field results and stats support the view of how important experience and coaching continuity is.
