Re Tempo....I sort of agree with Hoss....seems like you should be all in on it. They're still pretty fast on all downs, but they turn it up once they get a first down. I'm not sure I understand why they wait to go fast or why they slow down on third down. If tempo is your advantage, then, well, why wouldn't you want to play with that advantage on the most critical down in the game?

The problem with tempo is apparent...if you're not scoring, you're just punting really quickly. And you're undersized DL is going out there after 2 minutes of rest to get bludgeoned some more.

And that's what I don't get about Oregon (and RichGOD) -- I mean, why not look at your defense as a stand-alone entity rather than something that meshes with your offensive philosophy. Bend but don't break is an asstarded defensive philosophy! Why not, you know, try to build an asswailing defense? And maybe you don't have the talent for that, so then perhaps a defense that plays super-aggressive every down trying to push you behind the sticks? Try to get 2nd and 12 or 3rd and 10. And if they burn you for an 80 yard bomb, so what?--you have the offense to score...and that actually plays into YOUR tempo...putting their defense back out there.

Eh, whatever. An interesting tidbit from OSU "Insider" -- RichGOD really, really went out of his way to help OSU. Sent them tons of film. A couple others also, apparently, helped a lot....if this guy is to be believed and NFL guy that is almost implausible.

EFZ. That said, I do think that after the 1st quarter Ohio State got a handle on the offense. In the first quarter OSU was primed to get run out of the building. The first drive didn't see a 3rd down. OSU has to punt on its first possession and Oregon gets a quick first down then ends up in 3rd and short and the kid just flat out drops it. Huge, huge play. I believe the Stanford drop came on the next possession, but OSU had tied it up at that point. So I don't that was quite a big.

The other HUGE play was after Cardale Jones idiotic fumble, Eli Apple is able to force the TE out of bounds on what would have been a TD. Forcing Oregon to settle for a FG was immense. OSU retains the lead and then marches right down the field to go up 8.

The final HUGE play was on that drive to up 28-20, OSU had 3rd and 5 and Jones ran through the NG to get an extra two yards and the first down. Though, I think they would have gone for it anyway.

Anyway, Oregon's offense started out on fire, then they sort of killed themselves with two drops. But they really only had one drive that looked spectacular and that was the first one. They hit a long bomb, but the other real drives fizzled in the red zone.

I think his tips for stopping Oregon came from the NFL guy and Gruden, who, apparently, always calls him suggestions and ideas and was particularly amped about this game.

And, well, UFM probably had some decent ideas on his own.

IMHO the NC game is a great reminder about the importance of recruiting. Both teams have an effective scheme. OSU had way better athletes though in a lot of places.

Recruiting AND player development! OSU's OL isn't a collection of superstar recruits. Most other position groups are, but not OL.

The best effective tip to stop Oregon is be in shape and don't miss tackles.

Oregon has climbed to the top largely on the merit of being an attention whore, like a shitty actress who has her career because of a sex tape. They will fall eventually, and I can't think of a program whose misery I'm going to enjoy more.

If OSU had alabama's LB's they don't win. They could play in space and get to the edge without over pursuing. Sometimes you have bad matchups

You have to win your conference first. Your program will and should be focused on that... Which leads to certain designs and approaches.

I'm not talking about that ...... Spready offenses, like Oregon's work fine but if it is true at Oregon that, like RR, defense is an after thought, that's the problem with spready offenses. See talent's run down on that above.

I actually think that like osu's, Oregon's offense is a hybrid. They can power run the ball ..... in the PAC12 where defense is not played very well outside of maybe USC, maybe UCLA (now) and Udub. Against good defensive fronts made up of linemen, LBs and Ss that are both big, strong and quick, those "quick" 270-290lb OL guys and speedy of foot QBs are going to get eaten alive.

I love any offense, pro or spread, that makes the defense cover the whole field and also makes the D account for a QB who can consistently get yards. It doesn't have to be the prototypical dual threat QB who was raised in HS on and ran the read option well while also earning honors as a State sprint champ. Personally, I like guys like Cam Newton And Cardale Jones ..... big guys who also have decent speed and some shifty moves.
