I'm with Mike on the approach for this season. I'll discuss this with our pool buddies but I just don't want to help feed the machine that Brandon thinks he can depend on. The more loyal fans just cave for, well, because we're loyal, the more it feeds into the kind of game Brandon thinks he can play.

He needs a string of games where only 80 or 90K buy in, students stop showing up and its obvious on TV that the stadium is no longer selling out and the talking heads start talking openly about it. The product right now is shit for all the reasons we've talked about here.

He and the rest of deciders need to feel the pressure and start listening to what fans with deep pockets want and not the cardboard for pizza he's trying to sell them. It may not cost anything now, and Brandon can play this game for a while but someone with a brain inside the U better be paying attention.

There's a generation, maybe two of potential M fans who are going to want to be doing something else with their kids that they value more than M football on Saturday afternoons. They'll stop shelling out big bucks for a poor quality product to keep the loyalty train running. They won't do it. Those who could be cultivated as the core of future M football loyalists will be lost to the game forever.
Bravo! Don't be a part of the problem.

    • I really overrated Scott, Ross, Thompson; basically that entire '11 class which included Amir Williams too.

      Comment

      • Everyone did. For whatever reasons, those players have never really developed, with the exception of Amir. And a miss like that is a killer.

When you get a great class, you can live off it for years. Matta got 3 great teams from the 2010 Sullinger, Thomas, Craft class. Now 2011 is proving to be a group of role players.

But, with hoops fortunes change in a heartbeat. He has a really good 2014 class coming that could mesh with senior role players. The 2015 class has the potential to be even better (Bragg and Kennard pending) and 2016 has some real potential, too. So, it's not football. A bad 2011 class and no 2012 class would spell prolonged doom in football.

There's also a little bit of "this ain't their year" going on. They really gave away the game last night. And that PSU kid had a fucking career night. Against MSU they had the win at the buzzer if Scott makes the layup or if Payne doesn't get a finger to the ball a millisecond before Thompson dunks it home. Against Iowa, they build a 9 point lead with 12 to play and Iowa scores 11 straight including 3 straight 3s.

In every loss the game has been anyone's to win with 4 to play and they haven't been able to find a way. I think, in part, it's because the offense slows down and they are a god-awful end of the shot clock offense. They really need to start trying to score as soon as they can because it can take them 20 seconds to get a decent look. Killing the clock and going at 10 is a disaster. That's what they did last night when they got up 11. They also don't play good enough defense to get stops. 64 should have been plenty to beat PSU at home. They just don't defend well, at all.

All in all, not Matta's best job in every sense.

If Ohio State manages to blow their streak against nFw this year I'm going to really be pissed. nFw hasn't won a football OR basketball game in Columbus since......

            • I'll be pulling for NfW ..... and I really don't pay much attention to B-Ball ..... but watching records go down the drain is something I'm very familiar with.

Time for osu fans to start feeling some of that pain even though its just basketball.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                        • Recruiting wise, Jamarco Jones may yet end up at MSU. That would be quite the pull for Dantonio and a definite blow to UFM. Malik McDowell is still technically on the board, but I still have little reason for optimism. So, basically it's on to 2015.

2015 begins and ends with Torrance Gibson. Really looking forward to how this class comes together. Gibson and, say, Damien Harris would be pretty nice.

                          • Preliminary list of 2015 kids with fairly strong mutual interest -- Ranges from clear favorite to definitely in the game. Also, not a comprehensive class breakdown. They will take another DB and at least one more DL. Very interested to see if UFM can finesse two stud QBs into the class.

                            QB: Brandon Wimbush, Lorenzo Nunez
                            QB: Torrance Gibson
                            RB: Eric Glover Williams
RB: Damien Harris, Jacque Patrick, Soso Jamabo, LJ Scott

                            • Interesting ohio fact in the news:

-- In November the Journal-News of Hamilton, Ohio, examining various police union contracts in the state, learned that in several jurisdictions, officers are allowed to work their shifts even when less sober than some drivers whom they ticket for DUI. In Lebanon, Ohio, for instance, cops can work with a .04 blood-alcohol reading. In Butler County, a .04 reading triggers legal protections for officers that are unavailable to ordinary drivers. (However, in Lebanon, an officer's right to suck on a breath mint before taking the test was recently removed from the contract.) [Journal-News, 11-17-2013]
