Of course, Bo respected and loved Woody. I doubt he respected and loved Hitler.
In any event, the Glorious Loser meme is back on full display. Though, TBH, it's always on full display since, well, M is always losing.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Bo Schembechler, when he was a kid, once cut down a cherry tree owned by his dad. Didn't have any real reason in doing so, just felt like doing it.When his dad saw what had happened, he asked young Bo, "Glenn, did you chop down my cherry tree?".
Young Glenn replied, "You're goddamn right I chopped down that tree. Those who stay will be champions".
His father proceeded to reward Glenn for his honesty and integrity with a silver dollar, which Bo promptly threw across Lake St. Clair.

This sort of reasoning from osu fans never ceases to amaze me. At least the Germans don't like to talk about Hitler or the Italians about Musollini.
People best know him as a good coach who never won a title. Put the accomplishments of Woody & Bo alongside each other, leave their names off, and ask a third party to decide who had the better career. I doubt anyone sensible would pick Bo. Same number of conf title, Woody had a couple more wins, and at least three national titles to none. And when you consider the context of their achievements, with Woody competing in a much more balanced B1G, he should win handily.
Seriously, I have found Michigan fans to be much more willfully blind to Bo's faults than OSU fans and Woody. OSU fans by and large have gotten over Woody. Many, many Michigan fans think whomever the next hire is needs to be approved by Bo's Spirit first.Last edited by Dr. Strangelove; July 21, 2013, 03:13 PM.

Woody was one tough coach. Nothing fancy, just ram the ball down your throat. “3 yards and a cloud of dust”. During pre-game interviews he would be asked how his team would play that day, and with clenched teeth he simply declared, “We’ll win!” And usually they did.
I well remember Woody and the down markers incident in 1971. It happened right in front of me. Woody totally lost it. Finally his temper did him in but nobody ever accused him of cheating.
The reason we all “worship” Bo is because he changed the culture at Michigan. We had fallen a long way from national icon status beginning in the later years of Benny Oosterbaan and continuing under Bump Elliott. Woody “owned” us throughout the 1960s with the exception on 1964. This changed abruptly in Bo’s first year reaching a climax when he sent a new and different UM team onto the field against the unbeatable Buckeyes in 1969. That game will forever be etched in the mind of long time UM partisans. From then on it was an even playing field for the next 10 years.
It doesn’t really matter that Bo almost never won a bowl game and never won a national title. He restored pride and did it with integrity. A tough act to follow.
Programs have ups and downs. Cooper came in as a vaunted winner at Arizona State but he couldn’t get over the hump against Michigan. Carr was a decent coach til he started to burn out, and of course you would never accuse him of cheating. As for RichRod – let’s not even talk about it.
I am with the people who believe you can still win with integrity. That’s what Hoke is doing. It must bother the Buckeyes here to keep mentioning this because they too have their blind spot when it comes to program integrity.
We’re still the leaders and the best!

Amen, Doc...
And WM ... that's why the thread title changed .. and will remain so.
Its an apt moniker for what the ohio contingent spews on a daily basis.
Watching these guys denigrate Bo is akin to watching Tom and Jerry cartoons. They keep thinking if they just chase that mouse enough, they'll catch him, .. even though all they ever do is smash their face against the wall ...."in order to lead America you must love America"
