Urban Meyer is the Biggest Hypocrite in College Sports

Earlier this week, Meyer made an appearance on The O?Reilly Factor. He was asked about Florida State?s handling of Jameis Winston?s off-the-field incidents. Meyer said he would have had ?a hard time letting it go.?

Travis has a problem with that, citing the multiple off-the-field incidents Meyer?s players had when he was at Florida and a couple he?s had at Ohio State.

The dark clouds from Gainesville catching up in Columbus for Urban.

I have no problem with the one game suspension. I think that's right. I have a huge problem with coaches taking away scholly money. That's akin to fining a player in my book and completely violates the facade of student athletics. But the important thing I guess is it punishes the player without the school or coach taking any responsibility.

I think there are steps between now and then that JTB can take to get that aid back. I'm not sure.

It's an odd penalty because I think UFM would use it selectively -- i.e., on kids with families that can afford to help their kid out if he lost summer financial aid -- whatever that amounts to. He did it with Jack Mewhort, too.

It's a fascinating "hot take" scene. 1-game? Are you kidding, too light!!!!!! Financial aid penalty? Are you kidding, too harsh!!!!! Anyway, the "hot take" cycle has pased.

The much larger question is whether JTB starts against Illinois.

              • I never anticipated the "hot take" media being able to simultaneously claim that UFM's penalty was both a joke and way too unfair. Fantastic.

                    • I know what it feels like to suddenly have to cough up money for a semester's worth of schooling on an out-of-state basis. My wife's thesis advisor at Michigan screwed up a grant application and we went from househunting in Ann Arbor to solvency crisis instantly.

I can understand the power of this as a disciplinary tool, but there are others that aren't a sudden attack on the financial stability of a typical middle-class household, if that's what the Barrett family is. On behalf of an institution sitting on an endowment of $3.548 billion dollars. There are obviously other ways that don't do this.

Take that not as a dig at OSU specifically, but a wider comment on academia's fall from the pursuit of knowledge to a very effective cash grab.

I think the entire Husker defense was intoxicated last Saturday.
                        Shut the fuck up Donny!

I don't know if it's too harsh or unfair. I think it's total BS. And Urban isn't the first or the worst. Dantonio pulled that kids scholly earlier this year but allowed him to play.

These kids are getting beaten on, risking life and limb, not to mention permanent brain damage. And they can't get paid. Except via scholly. Pulling the scholly just ups the exploitation of these kids to an unconscionable level. the school gets their pound of flesh and the SA gets the shaft. That should lot be permissible in any way and would not be in any other situation.

                              • Barrett will forfeit his summer scholarship package. However, he retains a chance to earn that package back.
I'm unclear as to precisely what it means, but my guess is that JTB will get his summer scholarship package back.
