It's really hard to run tempo on offense when you're 2-12 on third down.

Hoss:
Washington and Bennett were immense inside against the IZ, as well as the other guys they shuffled through there. Absolutely.
Wiz:
Harbaugh only beat Oregon once and even then he gave up 42. Shaw has had some success, though, especially last year on the Farm.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

But as I said, there's more to it than that; OSU had the wheels to stalk and prevent the cutback too, which I doubt OR expected. Pursuit has to be fast, but also under control...like slowplaying the option really.
The other aspect is that OSU did an amazing job stopping the IZ game with basically 3 players. Like defending the option, it works inside-out; if the OLB/Apex defenders are looking outside first, because they aren't concerned about the TB racing up the hash behind them, they get a head start. In the opposite case, they are tailchasing.
OR's ability to consistently gash people on those plays with those small OL and no lead back has always puzzled me. That should be priority No. 1 when playing those guys.
You're describing a team that trusts its speed. I've seen a lot of teams that think they are fast run to the sidelines out of control. This creates cut back lanes. OSU had the speed and trusted it. And when you add to it they controlled the edges with their DE's, and the inside run with just 3 guys, OU had few options left in the run game.Grammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.

I'm baffled that more CFB offensive coordinators and head coaches seem not to understand this and, instead, choose what they consider to be leading edge plays ..... a lot of them intended to confuse a defense, finesse a defensive linemen or LB or develop mismatches with chicanery.
This game was a beat down. It demonstrated the irrefutable value of simply wearing down the opposing team with brutal and physical play up front. That osu scored, what, 21 points in the 4th quarter is a testament to that venerated view point.
I think you are going to see a lot of that from M going forward. It's what characterized M's (and osu's who continue this tradition) best years. They ran the football and they ran it well with the best offenses just getting better in the 4th quarter because the other team gives in.

It does give a perception that the B10 is better for a lot of people unfortunately. Like someone that casually follows college football might think now "Oh, Ohio State won the NC, the B10 conference is great." ... Really it's a conference that has been much more top heavy than other major conferences when it comes to production, talent/ recruiting, & coaching.
With that said, things should change with Michigan and Penn St most likely emerging into great teams. The bottom teams in the B10 (Purdue, IU, Illinois) are all getting better too. Over the next couple of years, the conference as a whole should be better.
However, the last 3 years have an elite Ohio State, elite MSU, & good Wisconsin.
That's basically it.
Ohio State is the product of elite talent & coaching.
MSU has argubly an elite coach and good recruiting. That elite coach has a great system for developing its players.
Wisconsin has had good coaching and good recruiting.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill
