  • I would say we will be as permanently tarnished as Miami, Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma, USC, and Alabama all have been

These programs are shunned. The public cannot stand a cheater. The networks refuse to broadcast their games.

    • It's coming .... just a matter of time. (see link below for details on the SI story)

Big difference between the FSU/Bowden or Miami dust-ups and osu. Neither of those programs had coaches that violated NCAA Bylaw 10.1. In case you've forgotten DSL here's the allegation:

"........... Jim Tressel, head football coach, failed to deport himself in accordance with the honesty and integrity normally associated with the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics and violated ethical-conduct legislation."

All the rest, DSL, is distracting camouflage to the fact that tressel is a lieing sack-o-shit.

To add to that indisputable fact, osu is now going to have to deal with the scrutiny over the car deal given to Thaddeus Gibson that is looking more and more like it was (1) a deal that attempted to avoid state taxes on the part of both the dealer and the seller (DMV is investigating, has completed its investigation and will announce its findings soon), (2) of possible interest to the NCAA because Gibson may have received a car deal that other students could not get. That's the definition of inappropriate benefits if I've got this right ....... something jt seems to have a record at looking the other way at going back to his YSU days; I think the NCAA calls this a pattern of inappropriate behavior. Stand by for a show cause letter, bubba.

Moreover, as I understand it, the osu athletic department according to the NCAA rules, has to approve any car purchase of a student athlete. Did the osu compliance department sign off on this deal? If it's an illegal deal and they signed off on it, they are screwed. If it's a legal deal and they didn't know about it or it is determined that Gibson got a deal that other students can't get, they are screwed. Pretty good chance the going to get screwed or are already screwed part, when it comes to osu's compliance department is accurate. Sounds to me like the ol' loss of institutional control shoe fits pretty nicely here, don't you think?

Look, DSL, I appreciate the effort to defend your program but it was when I first came to know it in the 60s, a stinking pile of shit, an honest one with a great coach in Woody Hayes who had a lot of integrity but nonetheless a stinking pile of shit. Now it's a stinking pile of shit with a head coach that lies and until we have evidence to the contrary one that knew or should have known about the car deals Thaddeus Gibson and possibly others got that are more than likely to be judged inappropriate benefits.

      • What'd he do to Lloyd?
Well, since it is now well documented that Saint Jim is a liar, I can understand why he did, what he did to Lloyd Carr.

Saint Jim always claimed to respect Lloyd Carr.

Yet, when Coach Carr contacted ohio state with his concerns about the safety of our fans and players while in Columbus, the response was the bomb sniffing dogs, which was an obvious "FU" to Coach Carr and the entire Michigan program. This isn't surprising, because that particular adjective is required speaking when referring to us, .. but I digress.

And, of course, Saint Jim denied that he had anything to do with that. And, to this day, has never apologized for the incident.

If you respect someone you don't allow your assistant coaches to go out on recruiting visits and tell kids who are considering Michigan, that Coach Carr has "serious health issues that will require him to resign very soon". This has been documented by reports of players and families whose kids didn't end up at Michigan or OhLieOh.

If Jim Tressel respected Lloyd Carr, he wouldn't have allowed his assistant coaches to teach his defensive players to deliberately attempt to injure Michigan players during the game, in an effort to get them out of the game. And, if your players DID do that "on their own", you suspend them, or apply some other sort of meaningful punishment that demonstrates that this behavior is unacceptable.

But, now we know that any talk of Saint Jim's "respect for Coach Carr and Michigan" is a bunch of baloney. Lies, just like everything else that comes out of his mouth.

            • This brilliant piece is worth reposting, DSL your time would be best served if you started some sort of "reclamation project" with respect to morality, by " buy up " all the crap that Tressel's players are carelessly dumping for pennies on the dollar. Boy iti appears that it really means a lot to all this players, both former and current to play for Jim Tressel and The Ohio State University.

Ex-Buckeye WR Small says he sold rings for cash

              CBSSports.com wire reports
              May 26, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Ohio State wide receiver Ray Small told the school's student newspaper that he sold Big Ten championship rings and other memorabilia for cash and got special car deals as an athlete during his playing days.

The Lantern reported that Small, who played for the Buckeyes from 2006-2010, said "everyone was doing it" on the team.

Ray Small, who played for Ohio State from 2006-2010, says players routinely received deals on cars from Columbus dealers. (Getty Images) Five Buckeyes players are suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling memorabilia to the owner of a local tattoo parlor. That is considered an improper benefit under NCAA rules. Coach Jim Tressel also is suspended for five games and is under investigation by the NCAA for knowing about his players' involvement and not telling his superiors for more than nine months.
Small said, "We had four Big Ten rings. There was enough to go around."

He added that, despite Ohio State's large and proactive NCAA compliance department, most of student-athletes "don't even think about [NCAA] rules."

Small said he used the money he got to cover his typical costs of living.

"We have apartments, car notes," he said. "So you got things like that and you look around and you're like, 'Well I got [four] of them, I can sell one or two and get some money to pay this rent."

He said the biggest advantages came from car dealerships.

"It was definitely the deals on the cars. I don't see why it's a big deal," said Small.

Ohio State is investigating more than 50 transactions between Ohio State athletes and their families and two Columbus auto dealerships.

"They have a lot [of dirt] on everybody," Small said, "cause everybody was doing it."

Small had 61 catches for 659 yards and three touchdowns during his Ohio State career, which was marked by frequent suspensions and disciplinary acts. He spent time on the practice squads of the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins and has now returned to Ohio State to get his degree in sociology.

Small said players went to see Edward Rife at Fine Line Ink tattoo parlor because Rife was an Ohio State fan and gave big discounts. It was the U.S. Attorney's investigation of Rife on federal drug-trafficking charges that led to Ohio State officials finding out about the improper benefits.

Small said the players would have been foolish to turn down the discounted tattoos.

"If you go in and try to get a tattoo, and somebody is like 'Do you want 50 percent off this tattoo?' You're going to say, 'Heck yeah,"' Small said.

Tressel continually suspended or benched Small during his playing days at Ohio State. One of the team's fastest players, he was seen as the heir apparent to Ted Ginn Jr. after the wide receiver and kick returner went to the NFL. But Small's career was marked by being in Tressel's doghouse.

"They explain the rules to you, but as a kid you're not really listening to all of them rules," Small said. "You go out and you just, people show you so much love, you don't even think about the rules. You're just like 'Ah man, it's cool.' You take it, and next thing you know the NCAA is down your back."

Another former Ohio State player interviewed by The Lantern, defensive back Malcolm Jenkins, said Ohio State told players about NCAA rules and if they were broken it was the players' fault.

Ohio State spokesman Dan Wallenberg said, "We educate as best we can and expect student-athletes and staff to follow our messaging and policies."

Former OSU basketball player Mark Titus wrote Tuesday on his blog that the perks within the football program are far from a secret.

"Any OSU student in the past five years could tell you that a lot of the football players drive nice cars," Titus wrote. "You'd have to be blind to not notice it."

Small said there was no shortage of people trying to help Ohio State athletes.

"Everywhere you go, while you're in the process of playing at Ohio State," Small said, "you're going to get a deal every which way."

                        In other business at o-lie-o:

The (compliance) department now is expanding to eight full-time positions from six to monitor OSU's 1,100 athletes. Archie requested the two new positions before Christmas to keep pace with other major athletic departments.

Ah yes good old tax evasion & tax fraud. This has real teeth..... criminal culpability. The floodgates will open soon, most of the football team will be clamoring to cut a deal and avoid prosecution. It's a good start with the State boys but wait until the Feds via the IRS examine what close to 1000 tax returns by Tressel's teams over a decade? It's gonna get real and soon.

                          Tip of that melting Iceberg.

                            My Two Cents on OSU:

JB wrote a fine ditty regarding OSU and he pondered that Michigan fans could fall into different categories. Well, I’m a Michigan fan and I have the following comments on the state of OSU.
                            1. Don’t care if they cheat……..they have been cheating for decades.
                            2. Don’t care if the NCAA comes down on them like a ton of bricks…..they made their own bed.
                            3. To the people that say we have to have a competitive rivalry with OSU, I disagree. When we are on top everyone wants a piece of Michigan ( MSU, Penn State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Iowa, now Nebraska) There will be plenty of rivalries.
                            4. I have detested OSU for over 45 years, so I don’t care if they are sentenced into stagnation for the next decade.
                            5. Do I want to beat them at their cheating best? Yes, I want to beat them every time, every place, forever and ever.
                            6. To the guys from OSU that sold their rings, shame on you for thinking so little of the experience, your school and your teammates, shame on you.
                            7. I’m not an AD or coach so I don’t have to be politically correct. That said, I’ll borrow some high end vocabulary from some of the guys I know from OSU.
