Another little nugget discovered while perusing the web this morning:
Long time friend that is a NFL scout was told today the the tats are nothing compared to what the NCCA will likely find if they dig deep enough into the football players income sources especially the summer jobs program.
This info came to him from a Woody era player that finds the current state of affairs in Columbus disgusting.
Key to this is the scope of the NCAA investigation. If they're content to investigate the Tat Five situation only, then OhNo probably slips away. If they dig deeper, .. look out.

I've also read a piece from a buckeye web site written by a sports journalist that attended the recent dog and pony show put on by the NCAA at which the investigative and COI processes of the NCAA were demonstrated.
We know NCAA investigations cannot compel testimony so, allegations from outside sources like the media don't always turn out to produce an NCAA Letter to the institution alleged to have violated a rule. That's the case with the car thing and it may not come to anything this year. Possibly in the future if state or federal authorities get involved as matter of violations of tax law.
The writer suggested that the NCAA has enough right now to issue a show cause letter to tressel based on his admitted lying. He said it is in osu's favor that as soon as this was discovered, osu reported it. He did not offer an opinion on whether or not a show cause letter was in the offing. It is interesting that the investigative body - not a part of the NCAA Compliance apparatus nor answerable to it - usually is the adversary and the NCAA - in the form of the COI - usually acts to defend the accused. That's the first time I heard that view. I think its about 60/40 against tressel getting that death letter but almost certain osu will have to vacate all its wins for the 2010 season for playing ineligible players. He offers no opinion on other sanctions that would hurt osu going forward. I'd say its 50/50 that they get scholarship reductions and/or a post season ban. Given what USC got, one could argue they will get both.
The writer also offers that if during the current investigation, it is found that anyone above tressel or in the compliance department knew of the tat5 circumstances as it relates to eligibility of the involved players and did not act, the NCAA is going to throw the book at osu. IOW, they are in deep trouble.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. I'll believe it when I see it Jeff. With the NCAA, I don't have a lot of faith.
USC got punished, but imo, it was a weak one for what they did. Cheating is a risk/rewards gamble and frankly, the rewards >>> risks right nowGrammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.

Ent speaks the truth.
Right now, cheating may be risky, but it can pay off big time if you don't get caught. The NCAA is very choosy about whom they go after. If your program is well liked and well connected, its probably worth the risk."The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, .. I'd worn them for weeks, and they needed the air"

I think there is a tendency to over simplify what the NCAA actually does. There is also a widely held view that it has a big hammer. While it does have such hammer I think there are a lot of justifiable reasons why it doesn't appear to use it often enough ...... the biggest being a fear of pissing off its membership thereby causing its own dissolution.
Its easy to lose sight of the fact that the NCAA is a voluntary organization relying on the cooperation of its member institution to self police compliance with rules made by the members and administered by the NCAA. Is this the best way to keep big time collegiate sports programs from bending the rules/cheating to gain an advantage? I think that's arguable. But right now, college presidents seem to be happy with the way things are. After all the athletic departments are making plenty of money off CFB and BB to support all collegiate athletics and in so doing keeping academics, who might find no place for college sports at university at all, at bay.
It's an interesting balancing act and not at all as simple as hammering guys like jt who, IMO, deserves it.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
