Yep. It's a good strategy for a host of reasons. The talent is good and you can be so much more efficient. Plus, you're not chasing kids that are longshots. It's one thing to recruit against Alabama for a kid from New York -- that's a battle easily won. It's another to try beat Bama for a kid from Florida. Much harder.

The B10 has actually done very well in the Atlantic/NE this year -- from Virginia to Massachusetts. OSU/M/Rutgers/Penn State. Maryland will keep Prince at home, too, which is a huge get for them.

BTW, any concerns on Hand's visit?

McDowell came down to Columbus for the game, but I still rate than a non-starter.

I'm not sure what you're saying WRT the University. I could provide you gads of articles about the massive improvements Ohio State has made as a University over the past two decades. I could provide you numerous different rankings that have OSU amongst the top public universities in the nation and generally in the top half of the B10. .......Now, if you mean spending money on a top shelf HC, fair enough. If you mean spending money on assistants, ok, but M is pretty close. In fact, I'm fairly certain that Al Borges makes more than Tim Herman. If you mean spending money on top shelf facilities, ok.

Close. osu is a good academic institution. It's not Berkely/Harvard good but its good. My view is that there is a significantly different culture within each U. Take Gee for example. The guy was a hardcore football fan and played that role as a cheerleader for all the revenue sports - and for good fundraising reasons.

Coleman? Not sure she knows what a football is and only got involved seriously with the football program in transition from Carr to X when it looked like Martin had nearly F'ed M. We may never know completely what went down there but I don't think Rodriguez was on top of the short list of HCs for Martin.

The point is you don't have heavy weights around the osu program like former UM President Duderstadt arguing against the Big House project when it was just getting started, preferring instead the not entirely irrelevant view that spending heavily on athletics is garish and not at all appropriate for the University of Michigan's socially liberal ways. The F'er almost stopped it.

As a national football brand, you mostly have M to blame. OSU became THE face of the B10 when M hit the shitter. And when there was a chance they'd lose that status, they fell ass-backwards into UFM (though, Tressel would have never been fired if they didn't think UFM was coming). So, Ohio State remains THE face of B10 Football. That carries national cache as does having a coach like UFM. The program isn't quite where UFM wants it, but it's getting close.

Of course I have a major bias, but I don't think osu is as popular on the national CFB scene as you boys think it is. You ask anyone down here in the South what osu is all about and you'll get a blank stare and something about "3 yards and a cloud of dust." I won't argue with you that that is not at all what osu is about but, yes ...... perceptions.

ufm may have something to do with eliminating that perception but until osu can get to this point and knock someone like Alabama off, you'll continue to deal with that. And OBTW, when was the last time osu beat an SEC team in a bowl? 0-9. Infact, osu is 7-11-2 against the SEC all time. This is why, if you buy into osu being the face of the B1G right now, and I do, the B1G is considered irrelevant to the talking heads and sports journalists who are responsible for the folk's perceptions. I'd say, unfortunately, the perception of the CFB world outside of ohio goes something like this: osu? aren't they still on probation?

OTH, if you ask someone down here about Michigan, they'll say, yeah, that team with the cool helmets. I saw them play pretty well against the Gamecocks last season .... until that Clowney hit! They're still pretty good though?

So, yeah, I'll take that perception on the national scene even though you and I would agree that the team has been "in the shitter" for a decade. The Appalachian State debacle? Forget it. As real as it might be as a marker of M's sad decline, football fans down here and probably in most places have very short memories.

Ohio State has a massive AD. They provided more scholarship opportunities to its students than any other school in the country.

Yeah, the rest of that is as such. I was only explaining why OSU is where it is nationally. The perception I'm concerned with isn't that of some redneck dipshit, but recruits.

And Ohio State beat an SEC team in a bowl game in 2010. Watched it myself. And if I needed to get "technical" -- an SEC team lost to OSU in a bowl game in 2010. Also, I'm not one to claim OSU won an unprecedented 5 straight sole B10 titles (b/c PSU's co-titles in 2005 and 2008 were vacated). I watched PSU beat OSU in 2005 and 2008 and it sucked.

But that's neither here nor there. The point is, as you said, OSU is a team that competes on the national level; M is not.
