I don't see controlling the LOS in the way one associates with "shut-down".

I don't see any reason they shouldn't "control the LOS" as a top 10-15 defense. My big question is where they will get a pass rush. They only had 22 last year.
They return only 10.5 sacks for week one (doesn't include Jake Ryan's 4.5).To be a professional means that you don't die. - Takeru "the Tsunami" Kobayashi

I see a damn good defense already in 2013, an even better and much more experienced defense in 2014, and frightening good (best D since 1997) in 2015."The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, .. I'd worn them for weeks, and they needed the air"

The biggest thing potentially in this defense's favor is the depth that has developed quickly since Hoke took over. Remember that defense of GERG's that was about as impenetrable as the toilet paper so often ignored by the cooler-poopers of Columbus? Hoke and Mattison took and cobbled together as many working parts as possible the last 2 seasons, all the while getting the more talented incoming freshmen as much playing time as possible. As a result, RR's surviving recruits (those who are left after a large amount of attrition) have become experienced and dependable upperclassmen, and the first two of Hokes defensive classes got much-needed experience under their belts. I like the mix; I like that all throughout the defensive team, kids can be rotated in and out situationally and otherwise without much if any perceptible drop in talent level.
I can see Mattison going as much as 10-deep in his rotation along the defensive line, 8-deep with linebackers, and 7-deep in the defensive backfield early on before settling on a slightly smaller depth chart once we're into the B1G season.
From here on in, now that there is depth, Hoke and Mattison can be more selective as to which true freshmen should play immediately vs. which ones to redshirt, and this, too, will pay dividends down the road. With smaller classes projected over the next few years, in turn the recruiting can be a little more selective, too---it'll have to be.

I'm taking the over on the offense and the under on the defense...
Gardner and the receiving corps and only going to get better and deeper. I expect closer to the 2011 Toussaint than the 2012 version and this year, he's got more competition and depth behind him. I expect the offense to be near the top of the conference...
Defense will miss Jordan Kovacs a ton. I expect the defense to be better than they were last season but I think they got overrated last season too, thanks to the B10's horrendous QB play. With improved B10 qb play, the defense might not look quite as good.

With Anthony Calvino after 18+ seasons probably retiring after this season, this should be a good opportunity for him. Of course Eric Crouch tried this league with Toronto a few years back and did not fair very well. BTW Dan Hawkins was fired a week ago as head coach of Montreal in his first season after a 1-4 start with a team that had dominated this league in the past ten years.

MONTREAL - The Alouettes announced on Wednesday that the club has signed import quarterback Troy Smith to a two-year deal.
Smith (6’0”, 225 lbs.) won the Heisman Trophy with Ohio State University in 2006, leading the Buckeyes to the BCS National Championship game at the end of the season. In three seasons as the Buckeyes’ quarterback he completed 420 of 670 passes for 5,720 yards and 54 TDs.
"We welcome Troy to the Alouettes. We've been in discussions together for well over three months and have been patiently waiting for Troy to finish his commitments at Ohio State,” explained Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp. “We'll have to fast track Troy in order to get him over the learning curve of the CFL and caught up to speed over the next several weeks. He's here to learn and grasp the game for future competition."
Smith, 29, was drafted in the fifth round (174th total) of the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens in the spring of 2007. In three seasons with the Ravens, he completed 48 of 89 passes for 558 yards in 14 games. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers the following year, starting five games and winning three.
In 2011, he played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers the following off-season.Last edited by geo weidl; August 14, 2013, 10:05 PM.

Water Slide Park

Some of the nicest college dorms in the country have study lounges, a communal kitchen, or maybe even a game room. However, a new housing option at one school is about to offer something no one else can: water slides.
A group of students at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio will be temporarily housed in an indoor water park this semester, a local news station reports. Due to high enrollment and a large demand for on-campus housing, the school had to look for alternative residences, a Capital spokesperson told 10TV.
While 30 students will call the Fort Rapids Indoor Water Park and Resort home for the beginning of the school year, the university expects about 50 beds to open up within the first few weeks of classes.
Until then, though, these lucky students will have free access to a water park that includes 40-foot high water slides, water basketball hoops, and a 30 person hot tub.

Way off topic, but an interesting law that covers Kentucky's Upper Peninsula:

I hesitate to interrupt the flow of this thread. The M football talk, while off topic, is gads better than standard M posts. Frankly, so is the Gilligan's Island post.
However, Curtis Samuel finally made it official and committed. Really, really like the playmakers UFM is brining in.
Speaking of which, Dontre Wilson is getting more hype than any OSU freshman since Andy Katzenmoyer. He's going to have to average about 29 yards per touch to live up to it. More realistically, frosh Bosa and Mike Mitchell will see meaningful time, IMO.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
