The '08, '09, '10 defenses were awfully devoid of talent and it's not just RR's fault. His first full recruiting class was '09 and his defense in '10 would've been made up of only his true freshman, redshirt freshman and sophomore classes. He deserves all the credit in the world for the mismanagement of the defense but there was little talent there to do much with...
Against any offense that had a competent QB, Shaffer & Robinson had the choice of blitzing the house and leaving a weak secondary to get shredded or just sit back and give the QB all day to find a receiver.
Nothing they did worked, yes a lot of things they did backfired but even when they called everything right (I watched DVR's of all those games), there was always a defender who couldn't contain, couldn't stop the RB getting to the edge, safety biting for a pump fake, corner that couldn't keep a receiver in front of him, linebacker that couldn't shed a block to save his life, etc. Defensively save for about 2-3 players were about as talented as Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue.
