  • The '08, '09, '10 defenses were awfully devoid of talent and it's not just RR's fault. His first full recruiting class was '09 and his defense in '10 would've been made up of only his true freshman, redshirt freshman and sophomore classes. He deserves all the credit in the world for the mismanagement of the defense but there was little talent there to do much with...

Against any offense that had a competent QB, Shaffer & Robinson had the choice of blitzing the house and leaving a weak secondary to get shredded or just sit back and give the QB all day to find a receiver.

Nothing they did worked, yes a lot of things they did backfired but even when they called everything right (I watched DVR's of all those games), there was always a defender who couldn't contain, couldn't stop the RB getting to the edge, safety biting for a pump fake, corner that couldn't keep a receiver in front of him, linebacker that couldn't shed a block to save his life, etc. Defensively save for about 2-3 players were about as talented as Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue.

    • Glad to see there is at least someone that is not willing to treat women as punching bags in Ohio.

Hyde's three game suspension seems a bit hollow
      http://www.thelantern.com/sports/com...3#.Uf-tOdKsiSo

"Respecting women is one of its chief pillars -- you know, like the rest of the ones painted on that wall at the Woody.
It’s a list of tenets so basic, so elementary, so “Well, duh!” that screwing up would take legitimate effort rather than the occasional lapses of judgement that 18-22 year olds have.
It’s intended to draw a clear, firm line between stupid things and thuggish things; the difference between relieving yourself behind a restaurant after one too many beers and robbing a UDF with a Glock in one pocket and bag of Molly in the other. And while Hyde’s case isn’t even technically a criminal one anymore, it belongs in the latter category.
Hitting a girl or attempting to hit a girl (they’re the same thing) is being a bully and being a punk. It’s asking for trouble. It’s inexcusable.
Zero tolerance means zero tolerance. Hyde’s punishment looks like a lot of tolerance for disregarding a rule so important that Meyer had it painted on a freaking wall in big bold letters.
The suspension, while better than nothing, completely undermines and pokes holes in a really sincere idea that aims at breaking cycles of appeasement and enabling in college athletics.
Now, it seems a bit hollow.
If you’re going to preach “zero tolerance,” the notion must be an intrepid one. If you’re going to practice “zero tolerance most of the time depending on the situation,” then preach that instead.
You can qualify the situation all you want, but Meyer’s supposed zero tolerance policy has carried the implication that if you break one of his core values, you’re gone. Done. No questions asked.
Meyer likes to reiterate at press conferences with local media that he doesn’t have “bad guys” on his squad.
He might be right and I’m certainly not an authoritative voice on the matter.
But what Hyde did? That’s something good guys don’t usually do."

I will give Mattison's defenses some credit -- they've held Ohio State to 60 points in 2 games. For M fans, that's 30ppg.

RichGOD's shitty defenses, in contrast, held Ohio State to 100 points in 3 games. Again, I'll help with the math... roughly 33.3ppg.

            Definite upgrade.

            • Mattison has done a great job considering what he's had to work with. Chris Spielman had it right when he said that Mike Martin was the only player who was really good on RichRod's defense.

              • 50%. no shame, if Borges doesn't let the team down offensively, it's 100%.

Anyway in the rear-view mirror, can't wait for October 5th, was hoping Ohio A & M goes undefeated until November 30th but nFw may just do the job first.

                11. Ohio State at Northwestern, Oct. 5. This may be the Trap Game of the Year in college football. The Buckeyes go to Evanston a week after playing Wisconsin in what has become an annual donnybrook. The Wildcats come in off an open date, and previous games against Maine and Western Michigan. And Northwestern is good, with a ton of returning talent from a 10-win team.

                  • NW still has yet to field a defense that can consistently challenge for the B1G championship.

                    Offensively, they are there.

That seems a likely scenario. I'm comfortable with that. I'll deal with OSU being undefeated and M finishing off another no-titles season going into The Game.

                        • Screw that. I'd rather they lose every game. Not likely obviously but I don't understand why anyone would want them to win any game.

Bingo. This is the only approach to take, IMO.

I want OSU to come in carrying their nuts in a jar. They won 4 games last year they should have lost.
