      • Finally attemped to watch The Wire last night. Episode 1.

What separates this from your typical cop drama? Does it get better?

        Comment

        • Yes, it gets better. IMO, what makes it so good is the different storylines. It's not just good vs bad. It's good, bad and a lot of in between characters that you find yourself liking. You'll see that there a many storyllines in each season. That's another thing. Like most HBO series', you'll like some seasons better than others and all are pretty vastly different. It's been a long time since I've seen Episode 1, Season 1, but it seems like they take a couple episodes for character introduction. Stick with it.

          • I thought somewhat similar after the first episode but got a lot more into it by the second episode. Then, I was hooked.

            • The opening scene is brilliant. "Got to, man. It's America." Once the detail gets in full swing, it's really entertaining. I give Season 1 a lot of credit because it had to hook the audience and tell a fairly complex story. They didn't have the latitude with Season 1 that they did with the other seasons because (a) they already had an audience and (b) the other 4 seasons were actually written as couplets (2/3 and 4/5). So, they couldn't probe as deep as, say, the unbelievably good seaons 3 and 4.

Speaking of Snot Boogie and "America" -- I love the opening scenes to each season. Just brilliant. Season 2 -- McNulty bitterly pulling along the Yacht (obvious symbolism of who owns the harbor); Season 3 -- the towers come down -- obvious 9/11 and war reference; Season 4 -- Snoop buys a nail gun, but is really attentive and learns -- "you laugh, but I've been schooled"; Season 5 -- the "lie detector" -- "the bigger the lie, the more they believe".

              • With all of the recruiting rankings finalized, and with Derek Green pending (and, I suppose, Vonn Bell and Dontre Wilson):

                Top 100 Rivals Recruits:

                Ohio State 7
                Michigan 3
                Penn State 3
                Rest of Big10 1

                Scout top 100 recruits

                Ohio State 6
                Michigan 6
                Penn State 2
                Rest of B10 0

                247 Top 100 recruits:

                Ohio State: 9
                Michigan: 4
                Penn State: 2
                Rest of B10: 1

ESPN Top 110 Recruits (there were 5 OSU/M recruits between 101 and 110):

                Ohio State: 9
                Michigan: 5
                Penn State: 2
                Rest of B10: 0

So, according to 3 of 4 recruiting services, Ohio State will likely have as many or more top 100 recruits than the rest of the conference combined. UFM.

                • The punchline of the opening scene was utterly brilliant, yes. Then it just went on forever. Episode 2 was better. I imagine I'll be hooked, but I'm worried about my wife. This is a ploy to get us off our computers, because neither of us are TV people. We are internet addicts instead.

                  • Imagine that, an AD thinking about $$$$. Where's the uproar, OSU fans?

                    • There may be some initial grumbling, but all they need is for Saint Jim or Pope Urban to make a couple inspirational speeches, and they'll write the checks.

                      • If you Cholos want some high-quality, narcotrafficking drama, try Breaking Bad.

Never thought I'd cheer for crystal methamphetamine manufacturers/dealers! Mr. White is as dark as they come.

                          • I don't see a huge difference most times from the #84 overall recruit and the #164...

I think the top 150 or 200 is a better gauge of landing top talent.

                            • I cant be bothered fact-checking talent but if those impressive numbers are correct then OSU will definitely enjoy the best recruiting class money can buy...
