Actually when you put it that way, rather than the more vague verbiage I and others have been using, it's damn clear where this is going.

    • Attended today's game and was convinced at the end of the 3rd quarter that my in-person winning streak was coming to an end.

A truly shitastic performance and I can only apologize to all Cal fans everywhere for stealing away a game we did not deserve to win. I have to look up the last time we gave up 500 yards and still won the game.

We have issues all over the place except Braxton and the defensive line.

      • I watched some of this game.

Very surprised how poorly both offensive and defensive units looked. Esp. The D.

Miller has the same kind of aw-shit capability that Denard has but his supporting cast sucks.

This is good to see. You boys are going to find out how good a coach ufm is. Lots of work for him to do.

        Fickle? Whoa.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

          • Jordan Hall was coming back from injury. I can't expect a ton from him...yet

The O-line is where most of the offensive problems begin and end.

And to add a little perspective, this is still leaps and bounds better where we were for most of last year

            • If Cal had a FG kicker...OSU loses this game. You got lucky. And Cal really isn't good. They lost to Nevada. At home.

The B1G really sucks this year.

              • This is a good view. Stephen King in one of his books, while filling in a character, talked about some people that were very talented but through their own demons had lost it all. Somehow they sometimes managed to find themselves again. Quite often they became dependable and solid. They were never late for work or didn't miss a gig but the brilliance they had was diminished. It was all summed up by "They came through on the other side". I don't have hate towards Clarett. I truly hope he has come through on the other side and is able to make a good life for himself. He has paid his debt for the crimes he committed. Now it's up to him to see that he makes his life count.

                    • I'm happy to so Clarett more at peace with himself and, as Tony suggested, coming out the other side.

As for OSU, meh performance. Horrible tackling, stupid penalties, inconsistent offense. Terrible 3rd quarter.

My two complaints are the missed tackles and the number of 3 and outs. The latter was always and remains my concern with the spread. If your offense is stalling, you're really hurting your defense with the tempo. Ohio State's drives yesterday were either awesome or utter failures. Nothing in-between. That's the first time it's happened this season, but it's enough to raise concerns for me, at least. I guess that's the thing -- I'm complaining about 35 points and over 400 yards of offense.

I can't reiterate this enough, though -- fortunately OSU is heading for B10 play. There are so many garbage teams in this league that OSU, with all their weaknesses, still has a more than credible chance of 10 wins.

If Cal had a FG kicker...OSU loses this game
No. If Cal had an AWESOME FG kicker, OSU *could* have lost. I don't know what the national average is on FGA over 40 yards. My guess, though, is it is a fuck lot closer to 66% than 100%. In other words, you could reasonably expect 2 out of 3 from the distances he attempted -- far more reasonably than 3 out of 3.

But that's a silly game to play. If Ohio State could tackle they win by 3 TDs. Eh. Cal has a suckass kicker and OSU can't tackle. 35-28. I

                      • Urban's first game against M won't be a test. We're what Akron would be if you added a superstar QB. UMass pushed us around yesterday and killed themselves with mistakes. Mike Cox had more yards in the first quarter than his combined total against UConn and Indiana.

                        • Akron wouldn't put up 63 on UMass even if Denard was their QB.

                          • Hanni, I love your total pessimism. I wish it was more in line with reality. But, unfortunately, it isn't. OSU isn't good enough to show up and win any more than 2 games left on its schedule. The other 7 will require good to great performances. They just aren't there, yet. I'm happy, I think, with the direction they're heading. But, man, I wish they had some more skill position speed. Like any.

I'm enjoying YOUR pessimism too ...... and Sean's remark watching osu's opening game, "Oh the irony ....." rings so true.

I think you are right about ufm's offense. While it is different than RichRod's, I'd be worried about the inability to sustain drives when you need or want to get 4 yards per carry, no more, no less ..... just grind it out. RR's M teams had a tough time doing that more times than not and M's redzone play during his three years at M was just abysmal. I also think you are right about a lack of the kind of speedy athleticism, urban is looking for on offense. That's the Percy Harvin kind of guy. Not on the roster yet as far as I can tell. That hurts ufm's offensive philosophy.

Tedford does a good job with teaching fundamental, power football and good defense. That was a good defensive/tackling performance by Cal v. osu. I'd say most of the defenses osu will face in conference would play as well if not better than Cal's. Cal is built for PAC12 football against USC and Stanford. They are the Iowa or Illinois (historically speaking) of the B1G.

osu's trek to EL is going to be tough and Purdue will play urban and his boys tough too. So, yeah, I'd be concerned more about having 3 or more losses going in to The Game, than I would about playing Michigan.

If I were an osu fan looking at the mistakes on both sides of the ball and the poor tackling both you and I saw against Cal, I'd be thinking 8-4 not 10-1. Moreover, a problem that osu seems to have more than M right now, with the surprising emergence of a very good receiving corps for DR to throw to, miller IS osu's offense. That needs to change if osu hopes to manage more than 8 wins in 2012.

                              • Jeff:

                                (A) I'm not pessimistic. Ohio State will be just fine in the B10.

                                (B) Tedford is not a particularly good coach, or at least doesn't get the results a good coach should.

                                (C) Your comments about OSU WRs are hilarious.

                                (D) Unsurprisingly, M's vaunted new WR corps did fuck all against Alabama and, apparently, had a big day against UMass. There you have it.

                                (E) Cal as the Iowa of the B10 is fair. Incidentally, what did Coach Hoke do against Iowa last season?
