I can see a few G&Ts down by the water and regailing ourselvs with the exploits of dsl and talent and the rest of the merry men sporting scarlet and gray.

You'll have to wheelbarrow me back abord the Millenium for the second half or the cruise.

I don't know about that. I think it'll be someone with a previous connection to the program. At best someone who wants the opportunity to be the one to rescue his alma mater.

I think Sandusky will cop a plea to 'spare the victims' and the story will die out. The 24/7-lead-story coverage is almost as sickening as the crime. Some media, like CNN, dedicate entire programs to the story. I don't know anyone who wants to hear more about the story other than the trial outcome, so kindly stfu. The media circus is pathetic. They shrill one crime saga to the next.

Been a good past 12 months. Who'd ever thought Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State, and the Lions all would have a good year in football? Then toss in the Tigers...

Merry Christmas to you and Ann!

          • Thanks, Jon ....

You could be right about Sandusky coping a plea. I hadn't thought about that. If his idiot lawyer is a gage, though, sounds like he's going to fight the charge as apparently stupid and damaging to him and the state of Pennsylvania's interests as a move like that is.

            • Buchanan:

I have heard zero about that "rumor" -- frankly, it sounds implausible to me.

Smith will be retiring soon, but that's because he repeatedly assured key BoT members (and anyone else who would listen) that a bowl ban was "not on the table." The feeling amongst the people who matter is that the NCAA would have been satisfied with a one year bowl ban even if applied this season. It was their clear preference to take a bowl ban this season (even at the stage of the season when they had just beaten Wisky and were in contention). If it was a possibility, OSU would have self-imposed for this season. That's all on Gene Smith. That's why he'll be out.

              • I'd be surprised if Gene Smith is axed this late in the game. He has survived countless scandals under his tenure and sure publicly Gee is "outraged" but frankly he has the perfect AD to do their biding. If OSU was ever serious about cleaning house, Smith would have been fired at the time Tressel was fired, instead the double-downed and continued to "game" the system, enraging the Infractions Committee. The bowl ban and disqualified season caught them off guard, it retards Meyer's development of the team and generates an additional year of negative publicity & IMO most excellent.

                • And isn't Smith the guy who hired Meyer?

If so, firing Smith would be kind of silly at this point. Especially after he just brought in Meyer.

                  • Smith will retire -- soon. He f'd up the bowl ban. It's one thing to bungle a press conference; it's another to assure the BoT and other key OSU decision-makers that a "bowl ban is not on the table" (despite the fact that FtM + Repeat Offender = 1 year bowl ban roughly 75% of the time). He's finished. The people that matter hate him (and Gee, obviously, doesn't matter in any real sense). The fanbase hates him (me included -- well, not "hate" -- I think he F'd up in a way that ought to cost him his job).

Also, UFM was NOT Smith's first choice. He didn't hire UFM in any real sense of the word. The BoT hired UFM. What probably happened was that Smith and his "search committee" were introduced to UFM on Sunday and told they didn't need to search any further -- and get ready for a press conference, and try not to F it up this time.

There is literally no amount I wouldn't bet that Gene Smith will be out within twelve months (frankly, I think it is closer to 6 to 8 weeks at the max).

                    • Agreed that once Smith seemed cut out of the hiring process the future was clear.

                      • OSU benefitted from the expectation that there would be no bowl ban in 2012. They probably got Meyer cheaper that way and, possibly, Brionte Dunn.

                        • Bowl ban for '11 would've hurt your recruiting for '12 a lot more than a bowl ban that was just announced will hurt your '12 recruiting class. A lot of that is due to timing as Ohio's '12 recruiting class is pretty much sewn up except for a handful of scholarships; also helps that much of Ohio's class is homegrown Buckeyes that jump at an Ohio scholarship once offered...

NCAA probably will allow your guys to transfer, maybe just your juniors, maybe your sophomores too. I don't expect any attrition other than guys who fell behind on the depth chart.

                          Comment

                          • There's no need for anyone to transfer. They can't follow their coach, because Tressel can't coach for 5 years without his new employer jumping thru some serious hoops. A bowl/post season ban is not sufficient grounds to transfer. So, any transfers will be of the standard kind, not the "immediate eligibility" types granted to other schools in situations like this.

OlieO fans should be jumping with joy over these sanctions, given what could have been handed down. Over the long run, these sanctions will have 0% effect on their program. The lost scholarships won't even be felt.

And as an added bonus, they ended up with a better coach.

If anything, they've been rewarded for what they've done.
