  • Michigan had daddy greise on TV. The players didn't need to say anything. =)

I never had any problem with Michigan. The split, imo, was fair if teams couldn't play it on the field. Outside of the fan interaction on CNNSI and being accosted by an 80 yr old man with a walker at a mall, I never had a problem with Michigan fans. I do think the schools have a lot in common.. a lot, despite what hack thinks. The parallels and what the fans want are very similar. So to me michigan's program seems familiar, so I can understand it.

That doesn't mean I don't want UNL to kick the wolverines ass or that I think UNL would have destroyed them in 97. But I'm sure the Michigan fans feel the exact opposite. That's what we fans do..

    • It's a given in this discussion that being a sports fan comes with a certain amount of emotionally-charged decisionmaking. So, IMO, it's more of a surprise to me that any UM fan WOULDN'T harbor ill will toward Nebraska after that '97 politicking bullshit. NU's split arguments rang pretty false after Penn State in 1994. UM did its talking on the field and did not stoop to that level, and that in large part is why that is a shared MNC.

      • If life has taught me anything, it's that shutting up and doing the right thing almost alwasy ends up with you getting screwed. The people that yell, whine and complain the loudest usually end up getting what they want. It's bullshit, but it's reality.

In both '97 and '06, Lloyd Carr shut up and did the right thing while others yelled, whined and complained as loudly as possible. And both times he got screwed for it. I've seen that same thing play out in the rest of the world over and over and over again.

The moral of the story? If you're going to "do the right thing", do it because that's how you want to be, and expect that the world is NOT going to care and WILL screw you over for it. Don't do the right thing based on thinking anyone is going to care or give you any kind of reward for it, ever.

              • At some point?

When would that be in light of the fact that the circumstantial evidence is mounting that he knew what was going on with the tat5 when tressel did?

Sure. Fine. One would simply think that on a UM board people would be clear about who's taken which approach in this case.

We need to make recruiting inroads to bring our football program out of the doldrums, and hopefully this is just what the doctor ordered.

U-M needs to raise the bar instead of having it lowered.

I firmly believe that the best thing for U-M recruiting will be to have a still healthy enough OSU to put up a challenge. A kid isn't going to go where the big rivalry doesn't get as many eyeballs on the tube. The Big 10 needs a competitive OSU (not a cheating OSU) to maintain prominence.

The last thing The Game needs is another series of cakewalks. FWIW I think RR managed to shit on The Game far more than Tressel has by lowering U-M to floundering status. The Game foes not need to be the equivalent of watching Florida roll up on Miami or FSU now.

I enjoy the schadenfreude that OSU has now but we don't need a cripple to be left standing in their place.

                          At least that's my opinion

                          • Even with sanctions (loss of scholarships), vacated wins, probation and potential loss of Tressel; OSU will continue to be a power in the B10...

They might not be able to recruit nationally like they have recently or steal as many guys from PSU either but they'll continue to be the state of Ohio's team. A state that produces a ton of division I football talent and unlike other states that produce near as much talent [Florida, Texas, California]; they are the only major university in its state.

                            • I think that's my point in saying that Tressell took a dump on his school and the rivalry. The Game makes both teams and programs better, as long as they aren't led by cheaters. Both teams have experienced recently the discomfort that comes with dominating the other.

                              • I totally disagree with the notion of a worthy osu. The B10 does not need osu anymore. Before realignment? Maybe. Now. No. They can become irrelevant for a few years and work their way back into a position where they are deserving of respect. Right now, they are shit.

                                F.... them.

Worthy opponents have integrity. The present osu is full of cheaters, short cut takers and players and coaches who have a much bigger gray domain than I'm comfortable with. That is an abrupt turn-around from the era of Woody, bruce and cooper. As far as I am concerned, the traditional rivalry is over and The Game is just another OOD game M has to play in and do well in.

Moreover, the new Division set up in the B10 gives us 9 big games, most notably with a quality opponent in Nebraska, with the team that plays the best, a shot at a title game, the B10 crown and all that goes with that. Playing osu? Meh. If M ends up playing osu in any kind of title game, that will raise the stakes and I might get excited but only to the point that I'll enjoy rubbing there noses in it if M wins.

We can thank terrell pryor and jim tressle, along with their cheating bosses, gee and smith, for bringing an end to what was already a tenuous tradition thanks to Rich Rodriguez and what he did to tarnish it himself. But in my view his shitfest pales in comparison to osu's when it comes to The Game.

I'm over it for now. Maybe over time, it will rekindle but I doubt it. Its pretty much dead.
