  • Re Bo and Woody again, to be fair, there surely weren't so many kinds of opportunities to cheat, and the money at stake would have been much lower.

    • Regarding potential OhNo game forfeitures.

Its my understanding that when a team forfeits a win due to player ineligibility, that those wins are simply vacated, and do not become wins for the losing team.

It would be as though those games never happened.

      • liney would be correct, those wins aren't forfeits or losses; they just take away those wins for the winning team. Not sure if they take the loss away from the loser, I believe they do.

I'd be happy with that much, as far as which games and/or seasons should be have wins vacated. To me, vacating wins is more symbolic than anything; the bigger punishments should involve recruiting and scholarships, etc.---stuff that will adversely affect the the vest and the bucknuts for years to come.

            • Like the way USC "suffered" under Lane Kiffen, especially after the crap that is surfacing from his brief tenure at Tennessee? Let's not forget Pete Carroll's nonsense yet Rivals ranked USC's class at #4 in the nation. I think kids today really don't care much, for many disadvantaged kids, circumventing the system is a way of life.

              • Not in defense of tressel but .....

This is a much more difficult time to keep talented CFB players in line than it was 40 years ago when the NFL signed first year players for $25K a season. The NCAA has recognized the risk to the integrity of the college game posed by the explosion of agents trying to take a cut of the huge pay-days the top entry level players are getting.

It takes men with a lot of integrity to run elite college programs these days. Men that can resist the benefits of corner cutting, gray shading and out-right rule breaking where there is an appearance that benefit outweighs the risk ...... jim tressel is not one of those kind of men.

What is the most disturbing thing and what has caused me to post some pretty over the top opinions on osu, jt and the M/osu rivalry is that tressel cast himself as a Christian man with high moral values. There is also the appearance those in the position to make these kinds of decisions inside osu's football program conspired to build a charade of compliance taking advantage of the cooperative and voluntary nature that is the corner stone of the NCAA charter to deceive them, the B10 and its members.

Fundamentally, I want to believe that the NCAA is looking at this aspect of osu's behavior and if there is evidence that there was an institution wide effort to subvert NCAA rules to keep players eligible, osu should get hammered in SMU fashion.

IMO, there probably was such an effort and it is not unlikely that going way back tressel was engaged in trying to "protect" his players who he learned through his extensive grapevine had contact with agents, boosters and other unsavory characters with money. I also think tressel firmly believes, in doing this kind of thing, he was acting with integrity. As misguided as that view is, I think it is an accurate explanation of tressle's behavior that is going to get unmasked in the coming months.

But that was the great thing about Bo. He wouldn't have let the NCAA decide who was eligible. HE would have decided who was eligible, and I have no doubt that he would have kicked them off the team. There was no gray area with Bo. His father lost a promotion because another guy got a copy of the test that was given for the job. Bo's dad was offered a copy too, but turned it down. Bo hated cheating and cheaters. Yes, it was a different era, but Bo would have stubbornly done everything his way and not given in to the new paradigm.

I think it's far more likely that Tressel is simply an integrity-free shithead eager to cash in whatever craven ways he can manage.

                    • OhNo is really in the frying pan with this thing. Once the NCAA starts sniffing around, there's no telling what they're going to find. We've seen before, where the NCAA will start with a benign inquiry, only to have it turn into a full-blown investigation. People start talking, and when that happens, the fertilizer hits the ventilator. If Tressel has any more skeletons in the closet, he could be in huge trouble.

This is one time when I wish that Maurice Clarett would start talking. But, apparently, someone has paid him off well enough to make it worth his while to keep quiet.

                        • Guys .... guys .....

Just my attempt to give balance to my particulary harsh (and well deserved) posts regarding osu, the vest and the tat5 situation earlier this week.

It's Sunday after all. All the worlds major religions have one day of forgiveness.

                          F .... osu.

He's a good coach who respected his players and, I believe, what M football was all about. He got screwed by his loyalty to his friends who were incompetent as well as some stupendously stupid decisions on how to put a good defense and STs on the field.

There is no comparison between him and a conniving, cheating jim tressel who, if this all comes out like it should, will trash osu's football reputation and cause a decade or more of recovery for a program who cheated there way to the top of the B10 and national prominence.
I dunno. Local scribes noted upon his arrival that the language used at practices was significantly different than ever heard at a Michigan practice before. Additionally, there was intimidation and belittling of players from hour one of practices. He also had many more transfers than I can remember ever after a coaching change.

                              • Yes, yes. Another way of looking at it perhaps may be to suggest no balance is necessary. And that, even on the day of rest for any of the three Abrahamic religions, Tressel remains simply a deficient human being. After all:
