  • Has Urban built his wall around Florida yet? The more bricks he lays there, the less sturdy his Ohio wall becomes.

    • Paul - Pope Urban, it is.

After all, he's going to be "one better" than Saint Jim, right?

Wait .. is a "saint" higher than a "pope"? Maybe some of our catholic-schooled contributors can help us out here ...

      • And fwiw .. when I started referring to Tressel as "saint", it honestly had nothing to do with his religious beliefs.

It was more of a poke at how OlieO fans viewed him. They considered him this perfect combination of a man and coach who could do no wrong. His play calling? Perfect. His recruiting? Perfect. His service to the community? Perfect.

So, I attached the moniker "saint" on to Jim. Of course I think we all knew all along that the man wasn't perfect, but some folks just don't believe until they are presented with the evidence. And still, some people view Tressel that way, even though he has admitted his misdeeds.

"Pope" Urban or "Pope Meyer" is the next incarnation of OlieO's coach. They're already gushing about him all over ESPN. I changed the channel to Judge Judy ...

        • "Urban Meyer is a fraud and a cheat! We fear nothing! Let him bring his lies to Michigan and he shall perish. He has never won anything without Tebow. He is nothing. All praise Coach Hoke!"

          • DSL... you might enjoy reading this. I think it pretty much summarizes my thoughts on the newly elected Pope.

At Ohio State, where there's no shortage of tradition and resources, Urban Meyer has all the pieces in place to build another winner. But will he stay anywhere long enough to build a true dynasty?

            • Of all the sentiments expressed by M fans, I appreciate Liney's the most (and Sean's). Really respect it, in fact.

              • "God be praised, Urban Meyer will not last two years before he is struck down with cardiac arrest! Coach Hoke will make sure every recruit knows this! Just as he has told every recruit that JoePa will be dead and that Dantonio will leave the moment a better job arises and that Brian Kelley is racist. Coach Hoke wants all recruits to make informed decisions. God be praised!"

                • Pasadena- I have asked Florida fans over at the Megasite if they blame Urban for Florida's troubles this year and they've said no. Just for the little that's worth. I don't know if the sentiment is shared throughout the fanbase.

I don't know if it speaks highly of Muschamp if he's bashing Meyer to defend himself.

                      • well, I think Urban will do a great job at Ohio as long he is coach there.

I am still happy we have our Flounder.

I think both programs have found coaches who fit their personality and desires of their respective fan bases.

Hopefully we'll actually have a rivalry again.

                          • Dont know if it was mentioned, but Meyer's contract isn't as big as initially reported. It's $24 M for 6 years, not $40 M for 7. There are bonus incentives based on how long he is head coach.

                            • I still say, bring him on. Let's do this.

Michigan finally has a coaching staff that kids enjoy playing for, and is coming off an unexpectedly successful season. We are poised to make a solid run into the next 5-10 years with a HC who is at his destination job, and will keep Michigan out of trouble. He knows how to recruit, he knows how to coach, and he loves Michigan.

Meyer is a successful coach. The numbers don't lie. He will win a lot of recruiting battles by default, just because his name is on the door of the HC's office in Columbus. We never had a chance with recruits like that anyway, so its a wash. I don't think any of us expected OlieO to hire somebody that ohio kids would HATE playing for. I mean .. duh .. even they can figure that out.

I don't think any Michigan fan should fear and tremble at the name of Urban Meyer. He's a very good coach, but the man can and will make mistakes. And he only has 85 scholarships just like everyone else. Will he always recruit a Top Ten class? We'll see.

                              • In the end, I doubt Urban beats Michigan as consistently as Tressel. I do think he will win more often than lose, but people underestimate the job Tressel did.
