  • at Tenn, they frown upon not cheating well enough not to get caught.

      • I still think tressel is going to avoid more serious and damaging punishment from the NCAA not withstanding the egregiousness of his violations .... and that is not because that's the right thing to do but because osu has the political upper hand with the NCAA.

The NCAA will not launch cruise missiles against Auburn or osu (Baharain and Saudi Arabia) but did against USC (Libya) .... there are parallels here. Its not in the NCAA's interests to hammer osu or Auburn. These two institutions despite the outrageous conduct of coaches in their employ remain models of cooperation that fits the spirit of the model for NCAA compliance (I think the model sucks but that's for another discussion). USC stonewalled and had a reputation for stonewalling, not self reporting and not cooperating when NCAA compliance started asking questions. USC's AD, Mike Garrett, was infamous for this. That is not the case with osu's or Auburn's ADs.

IMO, all of this is very sad for collegiate athletics because it will set the stage for more of this kind of behavior, give programs that cheat the upper hand in recruiting and those programs who fail to hold players to high standards of conduct and accountable to the rules unfair advantage on the playing field.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • They absolutely do. He was hired to beat Michigan, and he's doing it. As long as he continues to win, his job security is rock solid.
Throw in the glass football sitting in the trophy case too

Poor analogy. USC is the more storied program than osu or Auburn, their offenses were just more egregious and undeniable.

But Auburn is in the SEC. USC is a novice.

              • In the end, I don't think tressel's cheating that bought that trophy and may ultimately bring osu to its knees is going be worth it.

                • If you're saying cooperation gets you lenience, no reason to think OSU fits that description.

                      • I'm not certain that Jim Tressel's going to get to serve that suspension...

Aside from stating my opinion that the Dez Bryant standard ought to apply in this case, I've tried to stay off the "burn, Tressel, burn" bandwagon. First of all, I want Michigan to get good enough again to beat the guy, and second of all, we've had our own NCAA troubles, and it only takes one coach or player making a mistake to bring on more of them. But, if this report is accurate, Ohio State better be praying that there isn't anything at all out of bounds in their recruitment of Terrelle Pryor or in Pryor's relationship with Ted Sarniak. Given what we know of Pryor's judgment in off-field matters, I'm thinking there might be something of interest to the NCAA there.

I thought initially this was an eligibility matter, pertaining only to the players involved, that got bigger because of a momentary lapse of reason by the head coach. Limiting the punishment to the players and the coach made sense to me. But with the head coach involving an outsider in an NCAA matter while not informing his university, lack of institutional control comes into play here. If that charge can be made to stick, I don't see any way Tressel survives that.

                          • I'm sorry but anyone that thought this was not the tip of a steaming pile of shit when the tat5 episode was revealed before the Sugar Bowl hasn't payed attention. The shady operation of the whole of osu football goes back to the period when Steinbrenner offered Drew Henson a sack full of money to play professional Baseball instead of playing QB for a team that had the potential of delivering a loss to tressel in his first season at osu.

What we're seeing here is a modicum of justice being delivered by the inevitable unraveling of a pack of lies strengthening my believe in the dictum .... what goes around comes around.

The ascendancy of the osu football program post Cooper was built on cheating. Plain and simple. I don't give a rat's ass if tressel stays at osu so Michigan can get good enough to beat him. First, he's not going to last .... either osu will get smart enough to can him or the NCAA will. Being beaten by a cheater who leads a team of paid college athletes eliminates the value of any wins osu claims over Michigan since tressel took over as HC.

As far as I'm concerned, none of osu's victories over M since 2001 are valid. The record book should have an asterisk by every win osu has gained since 2001 noting that the win was achieved by playing ineligible players who received benefits starting with MoC in M's first loss to osu in 2001.

                              1. We have had our own NCAA troubles, and we have paid for them. We paid for Practicegate with a 2-for-1 penalty. What is the 2-for-1 penalty for a coach knowingly playing multiple ineligible players for an entire season, and then later lying about it to the NCAA?

                              2. Do you really think that this is just one momentary lapse in judgement by Tressel?
