The Tressel era will always be looked at the same as the Bobby Bonds/Mark McGuire/Sammy Sosa era in baseball. The records are there, but they are hollow in meaning. The asterisk will always be there, and will only be ignored by those who support cheating in sports.
Nobody outside of some Giants fans recognize Barry Bonds as the all time home run leader. That is, and always will be, Hank Aaron...
Nobody outside of a few whacked-out St. Louis fans recognize Mark McGuire as the single-season home run hitter. That will always be Roger Maris.
The precious scoreboards that ohio fans place above everything else in life, still read what they read when the games happened. But the real fans of college football know the real score. Those lofty numbers were attained the same way that Bonds and McGuire made their marks. By cheating.
The rest of the college football world looks at ohio and the pitiful way its clinging to its history with Tressel in the same way that you look at a grasshopper in the fall. The grasshopper is hopping along, thinking that summer is going to last forever. But, alas, .. that first chill of fall hits, and reality sets in. And, its too late, because his fate is sealed.
The best that ohio can hope for is that their current coach screws up this season badly enough so that their next savior gets the job next year.
Sounds familiar.
But, I must temper my thoughts with the bold prediction of our august legal expert here who assures us that nobody, and I mean nobody .. will ever beat ohio again, in any sport ... from 2012 forward.
And this, he assures us, .. was the reward left behind by Saint Jim.
... and here I thought that the newly expanded Big Ten was going to be interesting ...
