  • There is so much stink and smoke in Columbus that I can't see the NCAA wrapping up its investigation anytime soon. This is going to drag on for awhile, all the while hanging a black cloud over Ohio till the NCAA handles down its punishment.

In this press release from early Friday evening, it is reported that Doug Archie signed a check from the Athlete's "Emergency Fund" for $606 for car repairs in April to Auto Direct for an osu football player thought to be tp (redacted).

Can you imagine Michigan's compliance officer signing a check from a university account to pay for Denard's car repairs? Maybe this is legitimate but even if it is the appearance of it would make any reasonable man not even think about doing it.

You can't make this stuff up. Just incredibly stupid.

The existence of the fund is apparently no problem. Whether he checked with anyone to see if it's okay to use the fund for car repairs we shall see

      • Correct. Athletic Departments can have these emergency funds per NCAA rules. They are for emergencies like travel due to death in a family, medical bills, etc.

        Car repairs?

I kinda doubt it. It's also my understanding that payments from the emergency fund have to be authorized by the B10 Office in order to insure there is no inappropriate benefit going to the athlete receiving the money.

If Archie didn't clear this up the chain, its another line item under the heading, Loss of Institutional Control, supporting that allegation. How the hell does someone with check writing authority do this kind of thing? It is just utterly stupid just about anyway you slice it.

Even if he did have some kind of authorization from higher up, and you've got investigators breathing down your neck looking for stuff to nail you with, who ever authorized it is equally culpable and just as stupid.

Like I said, you can't make this stuff up and have it more laughable.

          • What is most ming boggling is who did it, the director of compliance.

            • I don't remember Hannibal defending Rich Rodriguez in the aftermath of the practice violations, and I know I didn't. The subsequent investigation of West Virginia for the same offenses, IMO, pretty much conclusively demonstrated that those violations were problems brought to Michigan by Rich Rodriguez. The ineptitude of Michigan's football operations employees(Draper, Labadie, etc.) simply meant that Michigan's compliance office couldn't put a stop to them earlier. The entire situation was stupid, but Rich Rodriguez bore his share of blame for the stupidity and the resulting black eye it gave to Michigan's athletic reputation.

              • All,

I felt I was diligent in including "(and this isn't necessarily a proportional comparison)". It seems that we learn something new about Tressel / OSU every week, so I probably shouldn't have even included the "necessarily" as we don't seem to be at the bottom yet. Two points: 1) I don't remember specifically which of you (other than Buchanan of course) supported Dick Rod and who didn't. We all wear the rose colored glasses...I don't take issue with anyone who supports their team. 2) DSL isn't on a safe/comfy Buckeye forum. He's here and I respect that.

                That is all.

Two points: (1) I have mended my errant ways of thinking Bench Press Jesus and Rich Rodriguez were going to change the way the B10 plays football ..... Wisconsin. (2) No buckeye fan will get any succor here. Let them suffer their indignities and rot in hell.

                        • When no one on your defense is ever in position to make a tackle, how strong they are is irrelevant.

Strength & Conditioning are supposed to come into play most in the 4th quarter. Michigan was getting blown out of games in the first half. No amount of S&C was going to fix that defense, nor keep the offense from turning the ball over like it was nuclear material.

                          • Barwis wasn't the reason that Michigan's defense sucked last year.

                            The offense wasn't so bad.

                            • The offense was great at blowing through bad teams and in making furious comebacks once the game was seemingly out of reach. It stunk at scoring points in the 1st half of tough games. Was that just bad luck? Dunno, but it sure happened over and over again.
