  • For a while, I thought that Gene Smith would eventually get fired, but I can't see any evidence of remorse or sanity in the Buckeye nation.

And I guarantee that at some point, OLieO fans will find a way to blame Michigan for their problems. Its just a matter of time.

          • According to 10t.v, channel 6, channel 4, ONN, & the Columbus dispatch tO$U may (as early as Friday) self impose a 3 year Bowl ban.

That tells you just how bad things are. I think they are getting a Lack of instatutional contol (which means the death penalty) from the NCAA.

Their a.d. (Smith) said when reading the NCAA report (which I posted part of :D) he was "very dissapointed with the findings."

            • We weren't even guilty of a Failure to Monitor.
Um, yes we were. It didn't amount to a stiffer penalty in the case, but that violation is a part of Michigan's NCAA record.

I think they are getting a Lack of instatutional contol (which means the death penalty)
Um, no it doesn't. Lots of programs have been hit with a lack of institutional control charge(USC most recently), and only one major college football program has ever gotten the death penalty.

The NCAA can reason that Pryor and his brethren's antics only affected one year, so thus, the one year postseason ban.
As a general rule(and there are many exceptions to it, some of them quite recent), the NCAA likes to impose two-for-one punishments. The most obvious example is the standard of forcing teams to give back two practice hours for every hour of practice time exceeded(e.g. Michigan's chief punishment for Practicegate). Another rule of thumb is two scholarships docked for every scholarship player involved in wrongdoing. If the NCAA sticks with that standard, given Ohio State's offense with respect to the Sugar Bowl, I'd think a two-year bowl ban would be warranted.

              • I'd be a little surprised if the self imposed sanctions came this soon but not shocked... We'll find how many of the countless allegations actually have legs too them.

                • Death penalty is your program is entirely shut down for a period of time, there is absolutely no chance OSU will receive it or anything remotely similar. Only once did the NCAA use this (SMU) and the results were devastating but well deserved.

                    • Something no one knows is the kind of testimony that was given to the NCAA investigators by osu employees and others from the outside that the NCAA had interest in and had something to say.

Investigators will be looking carefully at what outsiders might have said compared to what insiders said. Keep in mind rules of evidence that exclude something like hearsay in a criminal proceeding don't apply. In other words if the NCAA doesn't like an explanation, for example, how did football equipment get into the hands of players who then traded it for benefits, or, why was the monitoring of what players were driving around campus so lax, stuff like that will tighten the noose so to speak.

Bottom line, we really don't know how bad osu is going to look at the COI and, therefore, how tough the NCAA is going to be on osu, until we get the report and that's not going to become public until sometime in October .... unless someone inside leaks it.

I think WhoDean hits the least costly sanction ..... it goes up from there depending on how much the NCAA believes osu is being truthful. In developing a strategy for their presentation to the COI, osu is going to have to be very careful to not leave the impression that some individuals in compliance who should have been paying attention weren't. That is going to be a very difficult thing to do based on what we know publicly about the situation.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                        • I'll be shocked if OSU imposes anything greater than Gene Smith having to stand in the corner quietly for five minutes. A rotten culture doesn't fix itself. OSU's best hope is to deny as much as possible and then hope that the NCAA has the same mentality as the "Casey Anthony not guilty" jury.

                          • As I expected.

OSU's self-imposed "punishment" includes no scholarship losses or bowl ban.

                              • In their eyes, they deserve less of a penalty for cheating that gained them a large competitive advantage than we got for 15 minutes a day of stretching.
