I don't disagree with the gist of your post, just your use of the AAU as a standard. Its misguided.
I don't usually go down this road but this is an interesting topic and I certainly respect your intellect from what I've seen of your posts. Moreover, I frigging hate to be wrong!!!

A simple Google Machine search (I really do hate that thing) turned up plenty of raving support for membership in the AAU. So, this is wrong:

Frankly, I do not believe its held in high regard by many anymore ......

"A spokesman for nonmember UCONN called it "perhaps the most elite organization in higher education. You'd probably be hard-pressed to find a major research university that didn't want to be a member of the AAU."

In 2012, the new elected chancellor of Amherst Univ., a nonmember of AAU reaffirmed the Framework goal of elevating the campus to AAU standards, which aspire them to become a member in the near future, calling it as a distinctive status. Because of the lengthy and difficult entrance process, boards of directors, Legislators often see membership as evidence of the quality of a university."

OK, its from Wiki ...... weak. But, You are wrong, I am right and that is all that is important here!

Seriously though, I really do think AAU membership, as far as academicians are concerned (and I find most of them worthless so, you and I would probably agree here) is more important than you give it credit for in academia (another place I despise).

Its a decent and important measure of the quality and rigor of degree granting institutions, esp. at the post grad level, for academicians. Sure, it may be a laugher for some, probably both you and me, but it is nonetheless a reasonable standard by which the rigor of various research and degree granting institutions can be measured.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

LOL. I don't think they had AAU membership in mind when it was established 100 years ago, and its too big to move now even with I80 expanding to three lanes. We're screwed.

Its something nice for a school to put on its resume, but serves little practical purpose. Frankly, I don't know how prestigious it can be when:

              a) We got booted because our med school is off-campus

              and

              b) We were able to politic our way into retaining our membership last time we were up for review

The former is just stupid, the latter places true the value of its standards in question if membership comes down to a popularity contest.

Hopefully in nine years our Innovation Campus will have ginned-up enough research dollars- of acceptable types- to get us back in.
