No shit. At least Callahan never portrayed himself as a "defensive guru". Pelini is a sham as a head coach. He is a coordinator and probably a marginal one at that.

I have described him as a Cover 2 wonk, and games like this only serve to prove it. He has a fine working knowledge of the Carrol/Seifert coverage schemes, and has ridden that as far as it?ll go. When we play teams who fall into the narrow scope for which its applicable, the defense does very well. More and more teams have been figuring out the weaknesses however, which are exacerbated by his poor recruiting, and we are finding out that he is severely lacking in innovation and flexibility. He is a cover band, unable to write his own material.

Coupled with his poor performance in almost every other aspect of the job, he doesn?t offer much.

Ohio produces gads of coaches, some great, some good, some not so much. You obviously weren't aware that, e.g., Ron Zook is an Ohioan. It's not all Urbie, Stoops, Lester, Shula, Hayes, Schembechler, Brown, etc.

Pelini would be fine as an NFL assistant...probably not good enough to be a DC at the NFL level...but he could coach what a good DC tells him to coach. That being said...his record isn't half bad considering his shortcomings...but Solich had a good record too and I don't consider him to be a great football mind either.

Pelini's problem is he cannot adapt. He will ride a failing scheme 50 feet under the dirt.

I would say my favorite part is how, when faced with a pair of 9t DEs and a trio of linebackers three yards off the LOS, we choose to lean on the expert pass-pro of Barney Cotton and throw the ball. Run QB leads with our 4.4-40 QB, outside traps, option football? Oh hell no.
