Bo is an NFL-level Cover 2 wonk. Period.

I used to think he had a "system" and was too stubborn in looking for solutions within that framework, but I am now convinced his knowledge base is simply very limited. He knows about half of Carroll and Seifert's playbook, and like a mediocre cover band can only apply what he knows from it. Incapable of writing his own songs.

This jives with my impression of him as a man...rather dull, inarticulate, not much of a forward-thinker. Close-minded, and not naturally inquisitive. To my knowledge we have never attempted any strategic off-season consultation with other programs in regards to defense, which speaks to that observation IMO. His few attempts to break out of his structural confines- due to sheer desperation- have been pitifully limited, lacked creativity, and in general have been designed to achieve his same conservative core beliefs in lieu of any true philosophical change.

I liken his success in 2009 and 2010 to that which Arizona had in the early 90s with their Eagle Flex defense, built around Tedy Bruschi. An innovative approach built on a core of great players that didn't survive long-term scrutiny, nor the loss of that talent.
