    • If I'm back in SD next fall, I will most assuredly take you up on this offer. Many, many Nebraska fans here, and they seem like good folks.

      • I hope to take you up on that sometime, Wiz. It may not be this year, but maybe the next time Michigan goes to Lincoln, I'll be there.

On a good traffic day, you might be able to make it from Plymouth in about 1.5 hours. But, its probably closer to 2 hours. From Plymouth, you'd probably take I-275 to I-96 West, then hit US-23 North, up just past Flint. Get off at the M-57 (Clio/Montrose) exit, and head west. Its about 25 miles west on M-57. Its a nice Sunday (sundae?) drive.

                    • NU is hosting a visit from a florida freshman who is transferring from the gators. 6'10, 220 lb Walter Pitchford. signed with Depaul out of HS in Michigan, but attended prep school instead in 2010 and then committed to Florida last year. He would have 3 years eligibility remaining after sitting out next year.

Besides a visit from Pitchford, the Huskers also are hosting three members of the Southwest Illinois Jets AAU squad today at the Hendricks Training Complex. On Friday, visitors are expected from an Indiana AAU team.

                              • A name worth knowing

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on June 1, 2012 at 11:29AM CST

As detailed in today's story focusing on Lincoln Southeast standout Trey Foster, a load of Husker walk-ons will be competing in tomorrow afternoon's Shrine Bowl at Memorial Stadium.
                                Thirteen walk-ons to be precise.

Among the walk-ons joining Foster on the South squad are wide receiver Brandon Reilly (Lincoln Southwest), linebacker Andy Janovich (Gretna), defensive tackle Dylan Utter (Papillion-La Vista), offensive lineman Garrett Johns (Aurora) and defensive end Ross Dzuris (Plattsmouth).

The walk-ons on the North team include wide receiver Sam Foltz and quarterback Ryker Fyfe (both from Grand Island), linebacker Mitch McCann (Omaha Burke), and running backs Jordan Nelson (Omaha Burke), Graham Nabbity (Elkhorn) and Cole Chvatal (Bishop Neumann).

So there's something to look for.

But I also want to bring to your attention the name of someone in the game who is not heading to Nebraska.

Kyle Cuddeford. He's a fullback from Adams Central. He'll be playing on the South team Saturday. But he'll soon be representing a much more important team.

On June 28, Cuddeford will report to take his oath of loyalty to the country and begin life as a student at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

As you would likely suspect, the process to be accepted there is incredibly difficult, usually taking about a year before a person finds out if he's been accepted.

First there's the initial application just to see if you've qualified, then the medical screenings, physical tests, teacher recommendations. "Every odd piece of paper you can think of that talks about you, you have to get," Cuddeford said.

On top of that, a person must receive a congressional nomination. Cuddeford received two, one from Congressman Adrian Smith and another Senator Mike Johanns.

And then comes maybe the hardest part. "It's just a waiting game," Cuddeford said.

The wait ended in mid-March. He was called out of class into his guidance counselor's office. There was a phone call for him. Adrian Smith was on the other line to tell him what he'd waited a year to hear.

"It's been my dream to go through there for all of high school," Cuddeford said. "My family has had a long line of military service, all Air Force, so they kind of heckle me about the Navy."

All in good fun. The family is full of pride. No one in the family has ever earned a four-year degree. But there's a determined teenager ready to change that.

"I want to be the first of my family," Cuddeford said.
And, oh yeah, he might play a little football there too. Cuddeford plans to walk-on to the Navy football team.
