Always been that way, but we've managed to do it pretty well. Like ent said...its effort.

Driving distance has been an issue for us since there were cars, and again, we've managed pretty well. We do need to do a better job regionally however, and the failure to do so in recent years has been one of our main problems IMO. We need to get back to "owning" Missouri for one thing.

Agree....its far easier today, or it should be for a hardworking staff that utilizes its resources intelligently.

    • hoss.. I think the rise of missouri has hurt UNL more than any other factor. It is not that Missouri became OU, but rather, 2-3 kids per year that would come to UNL now go to Missouri. That 500 mile radius became harder.

Making poor hiring decisions is what's hurt us more than anything. Those decisions opened the door for Missouri to cause more damage.

I'd agree with that. I guess I was looking at it from a today's perspective. What you pointed out was an enabler for it to happen.

          • That 2003 game turned the tide substantially. We'd gone down there and had tough games on many occasions but we hadn't lost there for like twenty years, let alone get our fucking asses kicked like that. Psychologically, it was a watershed moment...just like 1998 was for Kansas State.

There was only one great player on the field that day, and he wore #16 for Missou. That fact is directly attributable to Frank Solich. Then we hire Callahan and his music-box monkey of a defensive coordinator, allowing Pinkel to kick the door down.

There just isn't enough talent in Nebraska and neighboring states to bring in elite talent, you'd need a special coach like a Tom Osborne who can get the most of the talent you do bring in to get your program back to where it was in the 90's when you were competing for NT's. Concur that Missouri's rise is really damaging, they are keeping the top talent in Missouri in-state, which was once a major pipeline for Nebraska. You said you need 7-10 recruits from Nebraska and surrounding states, one that sounds really low and puts pressure on you to recruit nationally (kids who are MUCH tougher to land), two I don't see the 9-10 recruits the caliber you guys need in Nebraska and surrounding states, not with some schools like Iowa, Missouri and Kansas getting better at keeping their own...

                              -

Paul Thurston OL (4* from Colorado) is deciding soon, you guys should have a really good shot at him.

                              • WM... neb's class this year is only going to be 14-15 kids. Bo is basically setting it up to take 16-18 kids per year due to all the redshirting. Missouri has decent talent. Best HS WR in the country is in missouri this year. They state has enough talent to make missouri competitive. Colorado is almost the same. Kansas has better talent than Neb and Iowa and also has the Jayhawk Juco League. The bigTen region has to open up for Neb as well... It is not easy recruiting to UNL and never has been.

I agree w/ Neb needs a coach who maximizes and develops. Auburn's coach was a failure at ISU... he couldn't develop. I also think the offensive style UNL should go back to helps with the regional talent. That, imo, is I formation. Get classes in the top 15-25 consistantly and UNL will be competitive.

btw.. it is interesting looking at rivals rankings.. that 2005 class didn't live up to it's top 5 billing. Not even close.
