  • Q&A with Barry Alvarez about Nebraska joining the BigTen
Grammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.

    Comment

    • Nebraska will always have a hard time recruiting in the Big Ten. Take away the in-state base for almost any power, and they don't look very good. The Huskers are in good position to recruit nationally, thanks to their name and tradition, but that strategy can be hit-or-miss. The somewhat disappointing end to the 2010 season might be at play here. Facilities and fan base will always have Nebraska in play, but not as easily as Penn State or Ohio State, where a crummy coach can fall out of bed, land a decent recruiting class, and end up 8-4.

Nebraska always has a more difficult time in recruiting than most, but when we've had coaches who had something of a clue about it and put some effort into the endeavor we've done fine. We have a passel of all-americans and draft picks to attest to that.

Right now we have a staff that fits neither criteria. Most of our best recruits are either kids who most other programs won't bother too much with (academic risks, or probable baseball draftees), are ones we have some tie to, i.e. they are the cousin or brother of somebody tied to the program, or are coming here because we'll offer them a chance to play a position nobody else thinks they can play. Its Frank Solich all over again, except for the fact we have an elite coordinator (Bo himself) which we lacked for most of Solich's tenure, following the retirement of Charlie McBride.

            • hoss.. part of the problem with recruiting is we don't know. This staff hates recruiting sites and therefore, everyone is guessing who they are really targeting and offering. The assumption has been nothing is happening (not all, but by many). Logically, we know that is false. So it becomes degrees...

Last year, recruiting was suppose to be bad and I saw lots of bitching. I think UNL ended with a good class. We'll know more in Feb.

That said, commit #3 is a good recruit... yet most are bitching about it. Way too many Neb fans think that Nebraska should be USC in recruiting. It can't and never will be (legally). Go back to running I formation and leverage the talent you have around you. Nothing wrong with kids growing up in the state wanting to be part of the FB legend. Saves a scholarship as well..

Last year we had nine commitments by this point...coincidentally, that class is pretty roundly considered to be Bo's best. Today we have three, one of which is the son of an AC who played here, with two brothers on the team.

Now, I don't have a huge problem with Sam's offer per se, but I think it speaks volumes about what's really going on in regards to the points made in your first paragraph. You don't offer on a layup like Sam Cotton in June if you've got top recruits buzzing around like flies. I think they're dead in the water and wanted something to show the fans before they all go on vacation. I fully expect it to be several months before we see a commit that the staff really had to work for.

                • Top 10 classes aren't going to be the norm for you guys, I don't see enough talent in Nebraska and its neighboring states. You guys need a coach that has a home recruiting area that has a ton of talent; a coach with ties to Cali, Texas or Florida... I warned you that Texas recruiting could dry up with a move to the B10...

and again, what makes you think Texas recruits filled the team with talent? What texas kids have made the big difference at UNL over the last 10-20 yrs? This isn't about Texas. It's a question of a) not knowing what is going on in Lincoln regarding recruiting and b) questions of effort

                    • above is a list of the current roster post spring practice. You can see what I'm describing. to be clear I'm not suggesting leaving the big12 won't hurt us in Texas. It will. It is just that Texas hasn't been the reason for Nebraska's success.

Agree. There's talent all over the place, and I for one never liked the idea of investing heavily in Texas anyway. Its over-recruited, and those kids are brainwashed. California has been better for us historically, and that has remained true through the Big 12 era. Far more Californians on last year's depth chart than Texans.

Also...its only one class, but we actually signed four Texas kids AFTER the announcement of our move the Big Ten last year. We only had a commit from one beforehand.

                        • agree. Nebraska has had more impactful players from California and Florida than texas.

                          • Its difficult to land those kids from Cali, Texas and Florida; all of them are long shots at best. Its tough to build a team with little help in your region while relying so heavily on recruiting nationally... For the most part, kids choose to stay close to home, within driving distance...

Its apples and oranges to compare what Tom Osborne did in the 90's to what can be done today.

it is but you don't need a class full of them. Just 4-6 per year. Grab another 2-3 from Neb, 4-6 from the surrounding states and fill in the rest in big10 country and NJ. If neb goes back to I formation football, you have a FB that can always be a walkon and you end up recruiting one less position, which helps.

btw.. check out the rosters of the neb teams of the 90's. The real difference was the talent inside Nebraska. it was at an all time high Those teams had a lot of kids from neb starting. The rest came from all over. UNL has been a national recruiting school for decades
