  • Better coaching of average players = loss to BYU

We lost a lot of very good players and don't have Pierson-El. I thought we would lose to BYU anyway...but losing like that sucks. Knock the fucking ball down dumbasses. We burned two timeouts in the last 18 seconds and gave up a hail fucking mary. Fuck.
    Shut the fuck up Donny!

      • Thing is...I have seen a lot of teams look a lot worse in their early games under a completely new regime than we did yesterday, and often against worse competition. I think that's being overlooked by a lot of people.

When the protection held up, the passing game looked pretty smooth IMO. TA missed some touch throws, as we knew he would, but there weren't a bunch of passes flying around to nobody, skipping off the turf, or hitting safeties in the numbers.

Defensively we started off too soft and it put us in a hole, but the kids tackled well and actually laid on some hits. (As Taysom Hill can attest)

        • Didn't see it live, what a punch to the gut for N. Even the players couldn't believe what just happened, didn't want to leave the field.

          • It happens ........ suck it up and deal with it.

Cordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook, 1994.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

            • I saw the play twice on network national news broadcasts. You'd think no one had ever connected on a Hail Mary pass before.

Under the best of circumstances its improbable, but it does seem to happen more often in recent years.

We had a true freshman in man coverage on 10 (the target of the play) and he just got lost. He pressed 10 initially at the LOS, then just let up as they ran downfield and he turned to watch the QB. If it'd been on anybody else we'd probably have been OK.

The old saying is that you lose a game for every true freshman that you play. That was definitely true here.

                • I don't get it. everybody in the stadium and watching on TV knew the only shot BYU had was a hail mary.No pass rush at all. The BYU QB had all day to throw. Six defenders back but not a single one standing in front of the receiver, I have never seen pass interference called on a hail mary. Blitz the hell out of the QB and make him hurry the throw. Once again a "prevent defense" fails to deliver.

                  • Bummer. We've been there, so we can relate.

Thanks for taking out Hill for us though. We have a chance in that game now, albeit still not a very good one.

                    • You're welcome....but his backup is a 6'3", 205lb, 21-year-old "freshman" that once upon a time was co-champ of the 2011 Elite 11 camp with Jameis Winston. He ain't no Joe Bauserman.

                      • Huskers got treated like Larry Phillip's cellmate on that last play.

Understood. But in my eyes that game just went from BYU being a two-touchdown favorite to maybe a field goal favorite.

Thing is, when it works- and it almost always does- you don't hear about it. I don't think that almost every coach would implement the strategy if it was unsound.

I do believe that fear of criticism prevents them from utilizing other approaches which might yield better results, especially in certain scenarios.
