  • Alot of fans (Pelini dead-enders mostly) are trying to spin this as some bow-wrapping on Pelini's tenure, which is another sign of how far expectations have fallen.

I'd say that we looked like one of those no-defense WAC teams of yore, in another Holiday Bowl shootout. Teams that Nebraska fans used to make fun of.

Against Power 5 teams, Nebraska gave up 410 yards and 29.3 points per game. Ranks 50th and 51st, respectively this year.

#Nebraska QB Tommy Armstrong was 32 of 51, 381 yards, 3TDs. He set school bowl records for pass attempts, completions, passing yards & TDs.

          • Didn't see the game but Stan mentions that M seemed to lack effort this season as well. I saw a ton of that, a ton of frustration on D when DG would turn the ball over putting those guys back on the field.

First, under Bo, Moeller and then during most of Carr's tenure, M didn't turn the ball over so, there is that but when they did, I never once saw M quit. I saw it dozens of times over the tenure of RR and Hoke .... esp. Hoke.

One of the things that makes Neb and M similar is that, over the last 10 years, they have built a culture of losing, not of winning.

When they are available, which does not seem to be often, listen to one of ufm's talks with his team. He is not a screamer but GD, he knows how to get players excited. He is a fierce competitor himself, he takes no prisoners and most importantly, it would seem, he has an uncanny way of holding people accountable without making them feel small. That is key.

Good leaders figure out ways to motivate, hold people accountable while at the same time make them feel that they can achieve at the level they are capable of physically and mentally and then go a step beyond that. Everyone of you here has probably experienced that in your work lives ..... there are bosses that stand out because they were damn good and if you think about it, they possessed those qualities.

Clearly, from what I could see, Pellini did not. I don't know about Osborne .... probably. I know Bo had it, Moeller had it and in his fiery days, LC had it. They got it from Bo.

This is why getting a guy like Harbaugh to M is so freaking important. Why meyer to osu was so freaking important. The osu deciders knew this from the gitgo once it became obvious that holding on to tressel wasn't' going to happen. It took M two coaching changes and seven years. It looks like its going to take neb a few more tries.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

            • TO wasn't a yeller... he was calm, direct and focused on preperation, understanding your assignments and a comprehensive plan. Guys believed in him and played accordingly. Not perfect and sometimes less than good enough, but they had a culture of limiting mistakes, confidence through preperation and toughness. TO wanted competitors and they were rewarded with playing time.

              • How was Pellini different?

How do you see Mike Riley? Too early to tell?

                • Bo created a culture of nobody love you but me.. that is how he developed loyalty. The fans were against the team.. The media was against the team.. the University was against the team.. that was his culture and what they hang their hat on... It was effective to a point. But in big games with equal or greater talent, UNL struggled.

I've been told the staff was "young" in terms of their preperation, details, and organization. Leasons had to be learned the hard way before people thought of them. I would guess, and this is a guess, but TO was more likely to coach you on what you did wrong and pat you on the back to try again... Bo was more likely to scream at you and then in film review tell you what you did wrong. my sense..

So far, I'm hearing Mike Riley is very organized, professional, and is doing the little things Bo didn't. His staff is only half way completed so we will see. His style and approach is reminding people of TO...

no first hand knowledge of this, just what I was told or can see.. I'm not a bo hater, but I also think it was time to move on. I don't think we'd ever win the big10 with him coaching, but I'm also not sure we've done better. I'm hoping more organization and focus on details will take us a step forward. Logic says it should, but does it cost us other things? TO had Milt and Charlie to do the rah rah speeches and be his passion guys... Riley will need the same or it won't work.

                  • one sign I really like is our new OL coach worships Milt... read his book, has it on his shelf and attended several of Milt's coaching clinics/guest talks. it has been since 2001 that we will see an OL that uses uncle Milt's concepts and I like that.. a lot! Give you an example: Milt believes all OL should step forward first. the last two staffs believed they should step sideways. Different concepts on how you run block, but I like the step foward attitude. probably biased becuase Milt was soooo good at teaching it.

                      • They are different ways to motivate, but the end result has to be a getting the kids to commit to something more than themselves.

Bo built what was essentially a cult around himself. While that in itself isn't unusual- the term would certainly apply to The Bear, Osborne, Saban, probably Schembechler and Woody as well, among others- Bo's came at the expense of the program, university and fans. He wasn't nearly good enough to pull that off.

Well, with a track record like that he sounds like a can't-miss hire.
