That's the ultimate WTF hire. The best case scenario is Riley attains the Pelini comsistency. What checkbox does a Mike Riley hire satisfy? Mike Riley must be a hell of an interview.

I think Pelini will be a better head coach the second time around, provided he mellows out.

He's had a hell of a lot of interest in him over the years he's been involved with football. Pretty impressive actually but good God his W/L record every where he has been has been abysmal. Wonder what the deciders of all the organizations who actually hired him as HC or approached him for a job as one saw in him???

The Mike Riley story is yet another reminder of how short people's memories are and how silly coaching change discussions can get. Specifically, how people can't see when a program is enjoying unprecedented and unlikely unsustainable success. Both coaches and fans don't seem to be able to recognize this. Five years ago, when USC needed a new coach, they contacted Mike Riley, but he turned them down. Why would he want to go there when he's got a good stable gig winning 9 games a year at Oregon State and he would be considered a hero? The rational answer is "because he's not going to win 9 games there every year, because it's a shit program with shit resources". Not surprisingly, Oregon State has reverted to being more historical Oregon State lately.

This happens every year. Two years ago, Pat Fitzgerald was untouchable. Now he would be considered a bad hire. Last year, Mike Gundy was untouchable, now he is 5-6, with 5-7 pretty much a certainty. Last year, Gary Patterson was 4-8. Now he's the untouchable one. Just watch. When TCU reverts back to being historical TCU in a couple of years, he will be the country's next WTF hire.
