That would have been a problem.

    • Guess who Jim (the Dunce) Hermann took over the job of DC from. That's right Mattison who went to ND.

      • no -- a mobile passing QB was kryptonite. Running QB with no passing threat? Dunno.

Honestly, looking back, I don't know who would have won. Michigan won a ton of very close games that, thanks to our defense, weren't really actually loseable games. That was truly a remarkable team. Nebraska was a mighty good team that year, but it did need an illegal play to even remain in the conversation.

Overall, though, it seems that our Huskerz here need a reminder of their SEC heritage from time to time, and its fun to talk about '97. It's a good thing that winning clean is extra satisfying, because we're probably not going to be doing so again any time soon...

        • Our SEC heritage:

          Nebraska 17
          LSU 12
          National Champs

          Nebraska 62
          Florida 24
          National Champs

          (You'll recognize this one)

          Nebraska 42
          Tennessee 17
          National Champs

Michigan could use some of that SEC heritage. :-D

          • I was at that '98 OB. You guys definitely dominated them. Did Peyton convert a third down while the game was still in question? IIRC the first quarter was all 3-and-outs.

That said, like I said, Michigan plays a sport. On the field. We'll take our wins when we get them, and we'll cherish them even more knowing we didn't play and games off the field.

            • Scott Frost should be our ambassador to the UN with his unmatched oratory skills, capable of whistling up national titles from thin air. One can only imagine how upset Michigan fans would be had he remained at Stanford, and weaved his linguistic magic into a national championship for the 5-6 Cardinal. :-D

              • He knows how to orally satisfy men. That much is clear. Given that the world's diplomatic corps is overwhelmingly male, maybe you're on to something.

                • Actually in bowl games UM has a decent record against SEC teams, having beaten Auburn Florida, Alabama, Ark, Miss. The only real beatdowns in bowl games by SEC teams have been Tenn and Miss State. (yeah yeah I know Tenn and Miss State) Although we lost to SC we played em tough. Its just been lately that we have sucked against SEC teams

                              • That was a brawl...both figuratively and literally.

Really pleased with the outcome and how the boys played for the most part, but fighting crap was disgraceful. In 30 years of being fan I have never seen anything like it in Memorial Stadium...and go figure, its when Miami is in town. Its in their institutional DNA. That said, many of their players were hugging it out with Ameer afterwards. So not an entire bushel of bad apples.

                                That last TD was sissy-shit.
