  • Jackson was UNL's starting nickel... he could play in coverage and was physical enough to play at the LOS. His backup is athletic, but not near as good at the LOS.

Alexander was competing for playing time and provided depth... many felt he'd be in our dime packages

I'm hurting... I'm not gonna lie. I'm hurting bad. So much work out in this off season to get my weight down and body fat to prove to people I can be an every down linebacker. A lot of film study critiquing myself and trying to learn techniques from some of the best linebackers to ever play on any level. It's hard right now for me. I can barely express how I feel right now cause I'm numb to it. It won't hit me until I see my boys, my brothers, my teammates run out on that field aug 30th against FAU. It won't hit me till I see my boy @ameerguapo and @afro_thunder80 put up touchdown after touchdown on defenses this year. It won't hit me until my man @zaireanderson and @vrvj98 and randy lead the way to a top 10 defense. It's gonna be a long process back but I got a lot of good people on my side. I'm coming back stronger than ever. Trust and believe that!! Send prayers up to the man above for me but don't send me sympathy !! I will be back better than ever before !! #GBR #HUSKERNATION

        • Huskers are having a bad week.

          Comment

          • By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star0
The Huskers were back it on Saturday, a day after sophomore linebacker Michael Rose suffered a season-ending injury.

Rose hobbled around with a brace on his heavily wrapped right leg. He slowly moved his way through the row of linebackers slapping them on the back during stretching.

Husker coach Bo Pelini said Rose will have surgery some time this week. The injury was a non-contact injury.

"I feel for Michael, obviously it's a bad break for him," Pelini said.

            Other notes from Saturday:

            * Tommy Armstrong left the practice field early after what appeared to be a collision with safety Corey Cooper.

After laying on the field a few minutes, Armstrong did walk to the locker room on his own power, perhaps a bit woozy at first, but showing no signs of injury elsewhere.

"Tommy will be fine. He just got dinged up a little bit."

            * Running back Adam Taylor also suffered what appeared to be an ankle/foot injury, though Pelini was not immediately sure of the specifics right after practice.

Taylor was carted off the field.

            * Chongo Kondolo saw some quality reps as the No. 1 right guard on Saturday. He's battling for playing time with Mike Moudy also there.

"Chongo has really played good. He's had a good week. He's progressing. He's not where we want him to be yet ... but I like what I've seen out of him this week."

            * With LeRoy Alexander out for the season, the chance of true freshman Kieron Williams playing perhaps becomes greater. He's been working alongside D.J. Singleton with the No. 2 defense at safety.

"I think Kieron is aggressive, he has good instincts," Pelini said. "He's got a long way to go as far as his understanding of everything. The more we install ... it's all kind of running together for him, but that's to be expected right now. But he's showing a lot of good things early on."

            * Quarterback Zack Darlington took hits for the first time since his concussion injury in high school.

"Zack is a guy who, I don't think he's real worried about it right now. He's cleared and the doctors feel good about where he is. He hasn't batted an eye yet."

            * Givens Price, who has previously worked at guard, has been taking reps as a tackle.

"Givens has had a good week at tackle. I think that's the spot for him. I know he can go in and play guard but he had a really good week at tackle. I know he's comfortable out there and he's done a good job."

            * After the Rose injury, the backup to Josh Banderas as MIKE linebacker is currently senior Trevor Roach, Pelini said.

"He's played a lot of MIKE linebacker for us, he's a good football player."

            * The Huskers will take Sunday off before two-a-days begin on Monday.

            * Pelini also expects true freshman Jaevon Walton to rejoin the team within the next few days.

                  • The Arizona Wildcats have generated their first No. 1 rating of the fall preseason predictions.

Sporting News tweeted out its annual yearbook cover today, calling Arizona No. 1 and putting Rondae Hollis-Jefferson on its regional cover.

SN's Mike DeCourcy said of UA in the yearbook:

"This is a big, physical team that defends the rim well; center Kaleb Tarczewski and power forward Brandon Ashley provide as solid an inside presence as a team could want. What the Wildcats would seem to lose with the departure of Aaron Gordon should be covered by the elevation of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to a greater role. Point guard T.J. McConnell has experience running a high-level team and carrying it through difficult moments."

Meanwhile, looks like SN and DeCourcy also saw that Elite Eight game, putting Wisconsin and Frank Kaminsky not far behind at No. 3.

Kentucky was No. 2 in SN's Top 10, followed by Wisconsin, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Louisville, Virginia, Florida and Wichita State.

The second 10 are Villanova, Texas, Gonzaga, Iowa State, UConn, San Diego State, VCU and Oklahoma. is No. 16 and Utah is 20. The Utes are the only other Pac-12 team in SN's Top 25.

Ohio State is No. 21, followed by Nebraska, Syracuse, Harvard and SMU.

Arizona has not been rated No. 1 in either of the two major Top 25 polls, the AP and ESPN polls, since the 2002-03 season (when UA reached the Elite Eight before losing to Kansas). The Wildcats spent eight weeks atop the polls in the middle of last season, however. The major polls won't be out for another two-plus months.

Lincoln – Nebraska will make its first Super Tuesday appearance since 2011 this upcoming season, as ESPN and the Big Ten Conference announced its Super Tuesday schedule Wednesday afternoon.

The Huskers, who return all five starters from a team that went 19-13 in 2013-14 including All-Big Ten performers Shavon Shields and Terran Petteway, will make a pair of Super Tuesday appearances this season on ESPN. The nine-game schedule is traditionally one of ESPN’s highest-rated basketball series during the season.

Nebraska will travel to Ann Arbor to take on defending Big Ten regular-season champion Michigan on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. (central). On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Pinnacle Bank Arena will host its first Super Tuesday game when the Huskers welcome Final Four participant Wisconsin to town. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (central).

The only Big Ten programs making more Super Tuesday appearances in 2014-15 are Wisconsin (four) and Michigan (three). Nebraska’s only previous Super Tuesday appearance since joining the Big Ten came in 2011, when the Huskers played Wisconsin in their Big Ten debut at the Devaney Center.

Today’s games were the first announced regular-season Big Ten Conference games for the 2014-15 season. The full conference schedule will be announced later this summer.
