CHICAGO -- Pat Fitzgerald wants to be your friend again, Nebraska fans.
Fitzgerald, the Northwestern coach, said on Monday at Big Ten Media Days that he made a “bad joke” this month in describing Nebraska as a “pretty boring state” while speaking to boosters at a Chicago golf outing.
As you might expect, the comments provoked a variety of responses from fans of the Huskers, including some not fit for print.
“I’ve learned a lot of hashtags on Twitter,” Fitzgerald said.
The coach apologized and said he would “own” the mistake, but that he meant no harm by it. Fitzgerald said he was trying to compliment Nebraska fans on how well they travel. The visitors overtook a large portion of Ryan Field in 2012 as the Huskers came from behind to beat the Wildcats 29-28.
Nebraska visits Northwestern on Oct. 18.
“Our fans need to step up,” Fitzgerald said.
Last year in Lincoln, Nebraska beat Northwestern 27-24 on a Hail Mary pass from Ron Kellogg III to Jordan Westerkamp as time expired. Asked on Monday about how long it took to get over that finish, Fitzgerald quipped: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
The coach said he has spent just two days in the state of Nebraska -- not nearly enough time to form an opinion, though he said his players and staff were treated warmly on trips in 2011 and 2013. Northwestern upset Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in the Huskers’ first year of Big Ten play.
Nebraska fans heartily congratulated the Wildcats after their 2011 win, according to Fitzgerald. They did the same last season, said the coach, drawing a laugh.Grammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.

Sunday's donation awareness initiative has special meaning for Harriman family
Nebraska men's basketball assistant coach Chris Harriman is elated to report that his 6-year-old son, Avery, is cancer-free.
Seven-year-old Avery Harriman has slayed cancer twice, and now must endure a third battle with the disease, one that his father, Nebraska assistant basketball coach Chris Harriman, said is ?very serious.?
Harriman said Avery will undergo intense chemotherapy beginning next week after a bone marrow biopsy on Wednesday revealed leukemia has returned to Avery?s bone marrow.
?Because this is third time, it is very serious,? Harriman said. ?Our oncology team is meeting as we speak to come up with a good plan for him. We will begin treatment next week. Our first goal is getting him back into remission by using chemotherapy. After that, we will discuss further options.?
Harriman said Avery became very ill a few months ago, and since that time that his bone marrow wasn?t making cells in order to help him recover. That?s when doctors ordered the biopsy.
?We are crushed and devastated, but we will never stop fighting,? Harriman said. ?Please keep him in your prayers.?
Avery was initially diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 2, and relapsed on Oct. 17, 2012.
Doctors found a donor match that allowed Avery to have a bone marrow transplant on Feb. 15, 2013, and that kept Avery leukemia-free, until now.
Harriman and his wife, Cheryl, helped organize a bone marrow donation awareness initiative before a Nebraska home basketball game in January, in which volunteers were on hand to collect information from fans who could sign up for a bone marrow registry.
?You just go into an expanded registry in hope that at some point you can give another little kid like Avery a chance,? Harriman said then. ?If we didn?t have that, I?m not sure where we?d be.?
The Harriman family will surely receive another outpouring of support from others within the Nebraska athletic department, as well as Husker fans. Harriman recalled specifically how wives of coaches and administrators, including Nancy Osborne, Janelle Boehm, Billie Papuchis and Darcy Smith, would drop off food at the house and help in any way possible during Avery?s previous bout.
?This has been a pretty special place to be, which I had no idea about before moving here,? said Harriman, an Australian native who was an assistant coach at Saint Louis before joining Tim Miles? staff in 2012. ?So many good people have helped me and my family through this.?
