Last year's "Unrivaled" jersey found no Nebraska fans in the middle: you either loved it or hated it. Some loved it because it was different and used black. Others hated it because they thought it looked cheesy and the numbers on the front were nearly impossible to read from a distance.

So would Nebraska do it again? Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald contacted the Nebraska athletic department and received a curious answer. Not quite yes, and definitely not no.

According to NU PR, the #huskers "do not have any announcements to make at this time" regarding any alternate Adidas uniforms for 2013.

In other words, it's probably coming. If the answer was "no", you wouldn't say "at this time", but if the answer were yes, the next question would be what is it. So this "not yet" surely indicates one is coming.

So what should we expect? Surely a significant black presence, probably on the helmet.... maybe even the same black helmet as last year. The large arial "N" on the front of last year's jersey probably won't be back. Many people shifted their opinions after the game once they realized how difficult it was to read the numbers on the front of the jersey.

Perhaps a more stylized font for the numbers. I could see it going either "old style" and using the style of the 1962 jersey...or going modern with an aggressive font.

And what game would it be used? The UCLA game, which could be the biggest home game of the season, is one option. The Northwestern and Michigan State games will also be big. Or maybe it's the South Dakota State game, to add interest to a potential mismatch against a 1-AA opponent.

Or maybe a road game with a white jersey, black pants, and a red helmet?

If adidas wants another "unrivaled" game against another adidas school, the options are limited to just UCLA and Michigan. And for what it's worth, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said last month that the Wolverines would not have any alternate uniform styles in 2013.

    So what are your thoughts?
You need help finding shit to write about.

      • Harrison Phillips

Millard West standout defensive end Harrison Phillips returned Friday from his recruiting trip to Stanford.

His good news arrived Saturday: A scholarship offer.

"They told me they're very impressed with everything I did at camp and that I'm their type of guy," he said.

Phillips, a 6-foot-3, 245-pounder, attended Stanford's "Junior Day" on Tuesday. He participated in the school's summer football camp Wednesday and Thursday.

"I flew home Friday as they put all my film together," he said.

Stanford envisions Phillips as a tackle in its 3-4 defense, he said. The Cardinal finished 12-2 last season, defeating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Does Stanford's defense fit Phillips better than Nebraska's 4-3 base?

"With the strength and conditioning staff, they (the Huskers) can make me stronger and faster and bigger," he said. "I don't know which one would be better for me, but (Stanford) definitely intrigues me."

During Nebraska's camp recently, Phillips worked out as a defensive end, defensive tackle, center, guard, and even as a tight end. He hasn't received a scholarship offer from NU, saying Husker coach Bo Pelini wanted to think about how the Huskers might ultimately use him.

"I'm looking forward to hearing where I stand with them," Phillips said. "I'm not entirely sure yet."

Phillips, who carries a 3.8 GPA, has a slew of scholarship offers, including ones from Kansas State, Duke, Toledo, Western Michigan and Wyoming.

A few big-name programs are starting to show an increasing amount of interest, he said, including UCLA, Oregon State and Michigan State.

He's in no hurry to make a decision.

"There's no real time frame, but I'm not going to be a really, really late guy," he said.

            • I'd love to see some kind of analysis on how much extra money actually ends up on athletic departments' bottom line as a result of their teams playing in clown uniforms. I'd bet that it's around a tenth of a percent of their operating budgets.

              • The younger fans and players really love most of those hideous uniforms. More importantly, the apparel companies love them ($) even more.

                • I'm always hearing about how much the younger fans supposedly love them, but the young fans that I know, the ones who care about football, that is, absolutely hate them. Come to think of it, every person that I know or come in contact with either hates them or is indifferent about them. Where is this mythical population of sports fans who loves these things? They must be hiding out with the Hot Chicks Who Play Video Games.

Exactly how much $$$ are we talking about? I'll bet that alternate jerseys still account for a tiny portion of the profits generated by college athletics apparel sales, and I'll bet that tiny portion of money is virtually invisible when it boils down to how much Adidas or Nike would be willing to pay OSU or UM for the exclusive rights to sell gear.

                      • agree.. better.. but not a fan. The still messed with the numbers, which bugs me more than anything else about the uniform.

I believe fans of the teams don't like these uniforms.... i think they like tradition. I think casual fans or those who follow trends, do.. and buy them. That is who is targeted. The guy who will buy the trend but not tradition.

                          • I don't think anybody but Nike, Adidas have the numbers you're looking for. I'm with most people dislike alternate jerseys and even throwbacks but the apparel manufacturers wouldn't continue to make them if they weren't making money for them and without a doubt they are. Part of the apparel contracts Nike/Adidas/UA has with each university that's included is alternate/throwback jerseys.

                              • Fortunately we were down four touchdowns in the first quarter so it made little difference.
