    • Memorial Stadium isn't just getting more seats for the 2013 season, it's also getting new turf.

The best-known property in Lincoln is about to get new carpet.

Memorial Stadium’s FieldTurf will be replaced before the upcoming season, an athletic department spokesman confirmed.

The replacement project is set to begin Monday with the removal of the old turf, which served its cause for eight years, installed in the summer of 2005.

The installation of the new surface, which will have the same design as the old one, will be completed before the beginning of fall camp.

Cost of the project is set at $379,120.90 and will be paid for out of the athletic department’s 2014 Capital Projects budget.

Nebraska also utilizes two FieldTurf practice surfaces — one inside the Hawks Championship Center and another just outside of it.

This will be Nebraska’s third round with FieldTurf inside the stadium, after becoming the first college to use the synthetic grass-like surface in 1999.

It since has become widely used by other universities, high schools and some NFL teams.

When the original surface at Memorial Stadium was first replaced in 2005, it represented the FieldTurf company's 4,000th installation job.

        --------------------

I'm recommending that half be used to sell in small squares to commemorate Tom's last run onto the field with the team, signed by Tom and Bo, with half the proceeds going to teammates charities, and the the other half sold in small squares to commemorate the last TD scored on the field, by Jack Hoffman, signed by Jack and Rex, with half the proceeds going to Team Jack

        • The way Peyton Newell looks at it, he’s been on this recruiting trek since eighth grade.

That’s when he was invited to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Yes, they have all-star games like that for middle schoolers.

How’d they find Newell for something like that, one asks?

“I have no idea,” he says with a laugh. “No idea.”

He just knows recruiters have been finding him ever since. The defensive end from Hiawatha, Kan., has an offer sheet that runs more than 30 schools deep.

“It’s definitely a crazy process,” he said. “I’m very blessed to be going through it. I definitely do not let it get to me at all. I still have my priorities straight.”

It helps that he’s cut out the fat, narrowing his list.

Only six matter now: Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, South Carolina, USC and Georgia.

He’ll pick one of those schools Aug. 30, an announcement date he’s already set to take place at his school.

Newell says he’s basically done with camps and the recruiting circuit. But there is one last stop this weekend in Lincoln — Big Red Weekend.

He's been here before but Newell said this visit is about learning some of the details — “the stuff that makes Nebraska special.”

Newell joins a list of at least 10 known prospects from the 2014 class and a handful from the '15 class who are known to be visiting for the event.

According to the lists compiled from the three main Husker recruiting sites (HuskerOnline, HuskersIllustrated and BigRedReport), some of the notable 2014 prospects expected to join Newell include:

          * Offensive linemen D.J. Foster (Lincoln Southeast) and Nick Gates (Las Vegas).

          * Tight end Freedom Akinmoladun (Grandview, Mo.).

          * Quarterback Matthew Jordan (Jackson, Ala.).

          * Defensive tackle Zack Singer (Las Vegas).

          * Wide receivers Cameron Sims (Monroe, La.), T.V. Williams (McKinney, Texas) and Demornay Pierson-El (West Potomac, Va.).

          * Defensive back Luke Gifford (Lincoln Southeast), who already is committed to Nebraska.

          * In addition, Omaha North running back Calvin Strong is one of the prospects from the 2015 class who will attend.

It will be a new experience to most, but not to Newell. He actually attended the inaugural Big Red Weekend last year.

He was in Lincoln for the Michigan and Penn State games too, getting to chat with Kenny Bell and Rex Burkhead after both of them.

Newell isn’t tipping where he’s leaning. Kansas was his childhood team. Dad played football there. And you best believe there have been plenty of trips to The Phog through the years.

But Nebraska’s not exactly far away. Just about an hour-and-45-minute drive. And he’ll tell you Husker assistants Rick Kaczenski and John Garrison “have been two of my favorite guys from the beginning.”

“They’re one of the few schools that they’ve done everything right,” Newell said. “I know that I’m very high on their list and I’m a high priority and they definitely treat me like that.”

And so the family will get in the car for one more recruiting trip to Lincoln on Saturday.

After all, what’s another 120 miles each way when the journey to this point already has been three years?

          Stoltenberg nabs Husker offer

No commitment yet, but another in-state prospect has received an offer from the Huskers.

Gretna’s Mick Stoltenberg, who former Husker Steve Warren recently called “the ultimate diamond in the rough,” picked up an offer from Nebraska after working out for coaches at a summer camp session Thursday.

The 6-6, 250-pound Stoltenberg has played both tight end and defensive end at Gretna. He is being looked at as an offensive lineman or tight end by Nebraska, according to HuskerOnline.com.

Warren, who lives near Omaha and trains Stoltenberg at his Warren Academy, has said the young player's work ethic and motor remind him of former Husker great Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Gretna coach Chad Jepsen said Stoltenberg certainly is a player with a "huge upside" who never has trouble being motivated.

"Mick’s the kind of kid that’s going to work hard regardless of where he’s going or what he’s doing or what camp he’s at," Jepsen said. "I’m sure he worked his butt off and also impressed the coaches down there."

Zack Darlington said his expectations for his visit to Lincoln last week were perhaps too low.

That said, "I just think what the Nebraska football program had to offer was beyond what I could've imagined," said Darlington, the Apopka (Fla.) High School standout dual-threat quarterback.

"I was just blown away by the people of Lincoln, the coaching staff and players ... Just being around them for three days was a huge part of my decision."

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Darlington soon will be a permanent resident, announcing Friday his verbal commitment to Nebraska. He becomes the fifth known member of the Huskers' 2014 scholarship recruiting class.

His father, Apopka head coach Richard Darlington, said the recruiting process for his son is now "shut down."

"The way we deal with our players is once they're committed, it's like being engaged," the coach said. "You don't want to go out with other girls before the wedding date."

To that end, Zack Darlington canceled an unofficial visit to Ohio State that was planned for next week. He said the phone call to the Buckeye staff was difficult.

"I've gotten really close to coach (Tom) Herman," Darlington said of the Ohio State offensive coordinator.

But Zack Darlington also became close with Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Darlington also likes NU head coach Bo Pelini's no-nonsense demeanor. What's more, Darlington said, he should fit Beck's fast-paced spread system well. He noticed similarities to Apopka's offense while watching Nebraska practice in Orlando during its back-to-back appearances in the Capital One Bowl.

In selecting Nebraska over Ohio State, Darlington also turned down offers from Arizona, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Minnesota and Ole Miss.

Darlington's verbal commitment amounts to perfect timing for Nebraska. The coaching staff on Saturday is playing host to the second annual Big Red Weekend. At least 10 recruits with scholarship offers from the Huskers are expected to be on hand as NU tries to bolster its class of 2014 and get a jump-start on 2015.

Nebraska already has two touted young quarterbacks in its system in redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. and incoming freshman Johnny Stanton. Darlington embraces the challenge, saying he recently received wise counsel regarding the situation.

"When you go into a place like Nebraska, no matter what, there's always going to be depth, there's always going to be someone in front of you, there's always going to be competition," Darlington said. "I think competition brings out the best in me. I just think that's the way God made me."

Nebraska's involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes was attractive to Darlington. So was the program's rich history.

Richard Darlington said he's a longtime Nebraska football fan, noting Zack is named after former Husker offensive lineman Zach Wiegert, the 1994 Outland Trophy winner.

What's more, "Ever since I was little, my dad always said I looked like Scott Frost," the younger Darlington said.

Maybe the Darlington-Nebraska relationship was meant to be. When Apopka High captured its first state championship in 2001, it shared headlines on the front page of the local newspaper with Eric Crouch winning the Heisman Trophy.

Zack Darlington was 6 at the time. Crouch was one of his favorite players. During his visit to Lincoln last week, he unexpectedly ran into Crouch when Crouch was with his son at a Husker football camp.

"Zack's very familiar with Husker quarterbacks ? Tommie Frazier, Scott Frost, Crouch," Richard Darlington said. "He watched all of them on film growing up."

Perhaps Zack Darlington, rated a three-star prospect by the major recruiting web sites, picked up a few things. He threw for 1,725 yards and 19 touchdowns and ran for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns last season as Apopka captured the state crown in Florida's largest classification.

            Now, more excitement.

"I'm talking to you during one of the most thrilling moments of my life right now," Zack Darlington said. "I don't think I could've made a better decision."

Guys, I'm going to be honest with you, I flat-out love this pickup. I've seen Mosley a ton this spring and summer through 7-on-7, and he's a heck of a player. He's an outstanding athlete who makes up for his lack of size with excellent burst and insane leaping ability.

He's a big-time playmaker, and a serious competitor. One of my favorite kids to watch in CenTex. Way under the radar.
