November 1, 2011 in B1G Ten Football, General Sports Blogs, Michigan State Football, Nebraska Football

Last weekend three friends and I took the ultimate football trip. For three of us it started off on at Detroit Metro Airport on Friday morning to take a flight bound for Denver, Colorado. When we landed in Denver, we were greeted by another friend in a freshly rented Tahoe, and started the drive to Lincoln, Nebraska.
After a terribly boring, flat and treeless 7+ hour drive, and after lunch at someplace called Taco John’s, we arrived in Lincoln. Upon checking in at the Embassy Suites, we were given two free drinks apiece. We discovered a lobby full of Nebraska and Michigan State football fans enjoying music, free appetizers and drinks. (Note: They are not careful on checking drinking tickets, we probably could have enjoyed a few more).

After the drinks, we crossed the street to have dinner at Misty’s. Misty’s was recommended to me by my close friend, and Nebraska alum, Ndamukong Suh. Okay, he is not a close friend, but he did tell me via twitter to eat at Misty’s. Suffice to say, Suh knows his eats. Misty’s is a steakhouse with a wide selection of microbrews. It was hands down the best steak I have had and it was priced around Outback levels. Go to Misty’s it’s good.

After Misty’s we landed at some bar/warehouse/corn hole venue. This is the only place I would not recommend. Notice, I did not include Taco John’s in the non recommendation list? However, one good thing came out of this establishment, the “Suh Song”. Check out this youtube clip of the song, which we got to see performed live. Trust me, its even worse in person, but no less amusing.

After using the porta johns (no joke) at the warehouse/bar/corn hole venue, we made our way to O Street, home of the student bar scene. Immediately upon walking into the Main Street Cafe, a girl asked if we were from Michigan and bought us all shots. She wanted nothing in return, not even shots for her table.

This is where the story of Lincoln’s niceness begins. Main Street Cafe was full of students, dressed in costumes for Halloween weekend, all of whom treated us exceptionally well. In fact, a couple of them assisted us in our failed attempt to get inside Memorial Stadium at 3:00 am. During the course of the few hours we stayed at the Main Street Cafe, several people bought us drinks (we do not believe we were drugged, but test results are pending) and more made a point to approach us and welcome us to Lincoln. We were asked repeatedly if we were having fun and enjoying our stay and/or needed help finding anything in town. Bottom line, Friday night we had a fantastic time mingling with the locals. If you go to Lincoln, spend some time at the O Street establishments, it’s well worth it.

After a solid 3 hours sleep we woke up for the 11:15 kick off. The hotel lobby had once again transformed. Although the reservation desk was now a bloody mary / cocktail bar, since we were still drunk from O Street, drinks were not flowing Saturday morning as they might on a normal game day. On the other hand, the free cooked to order breakfast suited us just fine (again the check to confirm you are guest is loose at best). I cannot adequately describe the party atmosphere going on in the hotel at that time (or even the night before), but needless to say it was great. On our way to Memorial Stadium, which was a 5 min walk away, we were again repeatedly stopped and welcomed to Lincoln by locals, alums and students.

Notice the theme? People in Lincoln are nice.

On our way to Memorial Stadium, we got trapped in the middle of the Nebraska band walking/dancing/marching to the game. As we let them pass, several more people asked if we were having fun and wanted to make sure everyone was being good to us. We were asked if needed directions to the Stadium (no we can see it) or help finding the gate (ok we could use some help with that). Once in the game, we quickly discovered we could get as close to a college football field as any of us will ever get. We watched, from less than 5 feet away, as Michigan State entered the Stadium and took in the first series from field level right behind the Spartan bench. Bottom line, if you go to Lincoln, go on the field. Eventually, we were politely asked to track down our actual seats, which we did.

As for the game, the Spartans failed to show up, so there is not much to write about. I will only say a couple of things. First, Michigan State’s offensive coordinator, Dan Roushar, needs to seriously reevaluate his play calling. It has been atrocious virtually all season. Second, Nebraska quarterback, Taylor Martinez, has an extremely bizarre throwing motion. Michigan fan, be thankful DRob is throwing balls for you and not this guy. Third, Memorial Stadium is very, very quiet during breaks in action. Is is the only game I have been to where I could talk on my cell phone and have no problem hearing the other person. In a word, it was strange. The quietness was also noticed after the game. There was no screaming and yelling or anything of the sort. 85,000 people quietly, orderly and calmly existed the Memorial Stadium. The only sound seemed to be more people asking if we had fun and enjoyed or trip.

Related to the game, but more to the theme, after the game Nebraska fans line up in the tunnel area (where you can walk on the field) to cheer the visiting team off the field. I told you these people were nice. You can add classy to the list as well.

The niceness we experienced during our two days in Nebraska was noticeable and appreciated. However, we feared we were being set up. One of these times, we are going to turn around and get punched in the face. One of the locals hinted there may be something to our fear. He advised us the kindness wears off if Nebraska loses. If Nebraska loses, he suggested we high tail it out of town, and if we stick around, we should certainly not go out on O Street. I will not be able to confirm that for at least another two years, at the earliest. However, maybe our fears were warranted, considering the punch Nebraska delivered to the Michigan State football team. In the future, Michigan State (and other visiting teams) should consider staying somewhere far from Lincoln, maybe on prison grounds somewhere, the night before the game. Side note, I do not recommend staying in Sterling, Colorado.

Bottom line. If you have a chance to catch a football game in Lincoln, do it. You should go early and enjoy dinner at Misty’s and some drinks with the locals. If you do not, you are cheating yourself. Although they are in the Spartan’s division, I will root for Nebraska (assuming it does impact the Spartans).

The people in Lincoln are classy. I only hope the kindness does not wear off after Nebraska fans visit other B1G Ten venues (we heard repeated complaints that the fans in Wisconsin were not nice to Husker fans). If you are in one of these cities, be nice to Husker fan, they will return the favor ten fold.

        • Yeah ...... Stan and I will be waiting to pie your face. Hope you like Barbasol.

Seriously ...... I have grown tired of the crap that goes on in champaign, EL and c-bus. My interest meter in going to games in these cities is low. The home fans make it that way ..... interestingly, it is usually not students or alums but the trash that shows up to tailgate, get drunk and act like ass-holes.

Three years ago when I trekked to c-bus (first time ever), we were hosted by talent who was clear about avoiding certain parts of the city around the shoe. We had a great time and were welcomed by everyone in the lot we tailgated in. Sure we got some good natured ribbing but everyone there was great .... they were football fans who love their team as much as we love ours and there was mutual respect for that.

At the stadium there was a group of students handing out buttons urging fans to behave in a manner that reflects well on osu and the city - the school is trying to clean up the act of those they can influence. For locals, a handful of students and townies that come to the game already ripped and looking for a fight, that doesn't work out so well. I was within 100 feet of several drunk osu fans that had little interest in the game but instead wanted to start a fight with any M fan in the area. Its this kind of shit that ruins sports ... pro or college.

Its really great to have a team that people cheer for with class. I'll be traveling to Lincoln next season.

            • I won't go to Lincoln unless I can find a way to meet The Wizard there.

                        • Huskerz just looked like they were going through the motions today. They couldn't get anything going.

NW is a good team, but the Huskerz should have handled them.

                          • Well that was a healthy dose of humility.

Hopefully Bo won't murder anyone at the postgame presser when they ask difficult questions about how we, as a Top 10 team, managed to lose to 3-5 Northwestern.
