  • The one thing Pelini had at least halfway right was the offense. He wasn't recruiting the right athletes, but the general direction was good IMO.

I gave these guys a honest chance, but I am just done with the pro style stuff. Its just too much of a load for the OL and QBs at the college level, and its unnecessary.

    • Hmmm mm. If this is right thinking, does it apply to Harbaughffense?

There's enough frustration among M fans that says it does.

Harbaugh seems to think everything is where he wants it to be.

      I wonder.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Funny...I fwd'd a tweet along similar lines to entropy a little while ago. One of the Xs and Ox gurus that I follow (A BIG-centric guy) started a discussion on some of M's offensive struggles in the run game, noting that M does very well in short yardage, but struggles at 3 yards and beyond. Some M tweeters chimed in, saying that M struggles to handle stunts and slants.

Our issues are more comprehensive, but there are some similarities.

        • I like the pro style offense in college, I think you can find players that are undervalued kind of like pro teams find undervalued 3-4 defensive players. But you still got to have a good coach to coach it. You've seen Bill Callahan and Mike Riley try to run it, I'd never want see it again either. I'm not sure it would be the best approach in Nebraska.

Watching live, it's really hard to see defenders doing this given TV camera angles and such. So, I went back to mgoblog'so UFR for Cincinnati and damned if I didn't start seeing the impact of this on a per play basis on M's run game. I stopped reading/watching Video after I got to 3 of 5 where the slant screwed up the run blocking.

Seems like dealing with this is pretty basic stuff for an OL. I wonder what's up.

            • Well, it should be simple Jeff, as is much of football. But when you have to learn too many simple things, and don't get to practice them often enough because you're learning so many simple things, simple mistakes result.

Maybe if one could pare down the playset to something manageable it would operate better, but that rarely seems to be the case. (Wisconsin seems to be one exception) Pro style guys tend to be wired at the genetic level to go down the rabbit hole of "last man with the chalk wins" in lieu of leaning on players to win.

I do not see any point in running it. Most anything you can do with the pro style passing game can be done using the Mumme/Leach half-field method with far higher efficiency. You can then apply all that film and practice time elsewhere...like learning to block slants.

                        • That's part of it, but Riley was well respected in coaching circles also. Low expectations at OR St may have been baked into that tho.
