Puke, and magical coaching pixie dust...its all in how you utilize your players. Ross Druzis for example; potential all-conference DE if you put him in a scheme where he doesn't need speed and athleticism to rush the passer, or strength and size to 2-gap. Coaching.
Ohio State's 2013 class has now produced five first round draft picks. There are still 4 kids playing that could maybe get into the first round and realistically maybe 2. There's probably a pretty good case to be made that OSU out-talented UNL at 20 starting positions last season, minimum. And I say 20 because I think UNL had a better #1 WR and I'm giving them someone, somewhere else. And it doesn't get any better in the two-deep.
That sort of disparity leads to predictable beatdowns provided OSU hasn't elected to select their starting QB from a random draw at the Greyhound station.
Elite talent matters. Riley is doing a decent job of getting in a few difference-making players and hopefully filling it out with solid recruits. That and some good coaching should be enough to periodically win the West and compete in all other years. And it should be enough to give them a puncher's chance against whatever juggernaut comes out of the East.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]? Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
