It's why IMHO the AD needs to aggressively but diplomatically remind Mullen or any other candidate about Michigan's history and resources and compare them with the other university's history and resources. Remind the guy how hard it is to win at the other place.

Not a home run hire...but I knew we weren't going to get a HR. Riley is actually a good coach...Corvallis is one of the worst jobs in terms of resources in FBS...and he's in a tough conference and division...Oregon is a powerhouse...Stanford most years is...Cal was for much of Riley's reign...Washington has been up and down...only WSU is a turd...and Leach won a ton at Texas Tech...how is Pullman working out for him? Did he forget how to coach? How many wins would St. Urban or The Nick have in Corvallis? Winning seasons up there are pretty incredible when they happen. That being said...at first I thought it was a "meh" hire...but the guy can recruit and develop players...and is a good guy...that is why he was hired...time will tell...I want to see what his staff will look like...that will make or break Riley. This day and age you must have recruiting, player development and resources. Bo had resources. Now Riley does. Let's see what happens now. I know he will last longer than Price did at Bama though...Shut the fuck up Donny!

What's funny is the national guys for the most part love this hire...many UNL fans (unrealistic ones) really thought we were going to get a big splash...and of all the names thrown out over the last few days Few of them had support of these idiot fans...Tressel, Bielema, Mullen, Frost were all ridiculed...only Patterson seemed to have broad support...and we didn't stand a chance at any of these guys other than Frost.
The Great Nick had a meh record at Sparty before going to LSU...how did that work out?Shut the fuck up Donny!

Alabama hired Mike Price(for the few months they actually employed him) only after they couldn't land Mike Riley. Riley agreed in principle to take over at Alabama in 2002, then dithered about moving his family and asked for more time to consider the job. Alabama then moved on to the all-too-brief Price Error.
Interesting hire. I agree with much of what I've read here-- this would seem to be a hire as much about Nebraska's preferred temperament for a head coach as it is about results on the field. But it's not often anybody gets to hire a head coach with more than twenty years experience as a head coach, and Riley has very good recruiting contacts in Texas. This is a guy who knows what he's doing, and has never really had a shot at playing with great hole cards(in San Diego, he was hamstrung by the Ryan Leaf debacle). This could work.

Eh, I mean he has something like J-9 suited at Nebraska. Worth playing, for sure, but a loser more often than not when it runs into big hands.
Of course, he was playing with 8-4 off at Corvalis and flopping air.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

He's older than I'd like, but he ticks a couple of important boxes for me. Experienced, with a good reputation for developing players and teams, used to coaching without inherent advantages, understands the importance of recruiting.
